General Information

This degree prepares students for responsible positions in the area of risk management in both private and public sectors. Graduates learn the use of derivative instruments for different financial markets (funds, equities, bonds, commodities, currencies, assets and liabilities). Graduates possess the mathematical fundamentals needed in applying financial theory and the necessary computer technology required in the design and implementation of computer programmes in solving financial problems. Interested applicants must have a strong mathematical and quantitative background.

Career Prospects

Graduates will be employed to manage derivative instruments (such as futures, options and swaps) in various financial markets. Key financial events (such as the Orange Country 1994 and Baring 1995) showed that risk mismanagement could be fatal to a business corporate. Our graduates are prepared to handle derivative instruments properly so as to minimize management risk if corporations are to compete in the world market. As Hong Kong expands its role as the leading financial center in the Asia-Pacific region, there is an increasing demand for financial engineers.
