Research Degree Programmes

The Department of Economics and Finance at the City University of Hong Kong has one of the strongest research teams in Asia in the fields of economics and finance. We admit both M.Phil. and Ph.D. students. In order to be admitted to our Ph.D. programme, the applicant needs to have had a research-based Master degree. If he/she has a bachelors degree, but not a research-based Master degree, he/she can be admitted to our M.Phil. programme. Internal transfer from our M.Phil. to our Ph.D. programme is possible upon satisfactory progress, without much loss of your time. Financial supports to cover both tuition and living expenses are available to qualified candidates.

Our department has strengths in both economics and finance. Our fields include economic theory; international trade; industrial organization; econometrics; macroeconomics; international finance; money and banking; economic development; Chinese economy; Asian economies; economics of e-commerce; public economics; financial markets; security analysis and portfolio management; derivative instruments; banking system and financial institutions; and management of financial institutions.

Pacific Economic Review currently edited in this Department is now included in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI).

Note that all applications should be sent to the School of Graduate Studies, not the Department. Although not crucial, it would be desirable if the applicant can find a faculty member in the department who is willing to supervise him/her prior to his/her application. If he/she does not have a prospective supervisor, we can assign a temporary supervisor to him/her upon admission. The applicant can seek a more suitable supervisor after entering the programme. To get information about the research interests of our faculty members, please visit our department's website: http://www.cityu.edu.hk/ef.

To the applicant: About the research proposal

For your proposal, please write a few pages on the topic you intend to study, and how you want to approach the problem. Inclusion of details of your plan (including the model and equations) and a reference list would be helpful. Because of the large number of applications, normally it would be hard for us to comment on your proposal over e-mail.

To the applicant: Application

You should send your application to the School of Graduate Studies of City University of Hong Kong. Please visit the following website of the School of Graduate Studies at http://www.cityu.edu.hk/sgs/applicants/applicants_r.htm to view "Application Procedure", application forms, the address to which to send your application, and other information.

Please view the website thoroughly before you write to ask questions.
