College of Business Faculty Development Award (MBA/EMBA)


The Faculty Development Award (MBA/EMBA) has been established to recognize dedicated staff members who promote innovations to enhance the quality of teaching and learning for MBA/EMBA programme at CB.


To be eligible for the award, candidates should be regular full-time faculty and teaching staff members of the College of Business who involved in at least one MBA/EMBA course teaching in the previous two calendar years (e.g. 2013 and 2014 calendar year for 2015 round).

To encourage broader coverage, candidates who have been recipients of this Award in the previous one year will not be eligible.

Candidates who apply to the College Teaching Excellence Award in the same round are not eligible. That is, one can only apply either College Teaching Excellence Award or Faculty Development Award (MBA/EMBA), but not both, in the same round.

The Dean and faculty members on the Selection Panel are not eligible for the award.

Selection Criteria

The selection committee will look for evidence and examples that the teacher demonstrates exemplary professional practices, excellent performance, and contagious enthusiasm in teaching and learning for MBA/EMBA course(s) delivery and development, including:

  • Diverse teaching approaches and skills that motivate and inspire students to learn.
  • Development of curricula and resources that reflect a command of the field.
  • Approaches to assessment and feedback that motivate and enhance student learning.
  • Contributions to the building of a discovery-enriched curriculum for the University and the College, and outstanding supervision of students to self-discovery of knowledge.
  • Integration of theories and innovation of teaching strategies for the MBA/EMBA courses.

Application Procedures

There is no application form. Eligible candidates should submit evidence demonstrating excellence in MBA/EMBA teaching by the application deadline. A dossier prepared by the candidate, which shall comprise:

  1. Main application document (MBA/EMBA teaching): a statement of teaching philosophy, approaches and practice with respect to the selection criteria, and other descriptions/presentations which are deemed relevant;
  2. Any supporting documents as evidence of approaches and practice outlined in the main application document.

Main application document (MBA/EMBA teaching) should be up to 10 pages, and there is no page limit for the supporting documents.

Selection Process

The selection committee for the Faculty Development Award (MBA/EMBA) comprises the College Dean or his nominee as its Chair, and one to two internal/external members who are knowledgeable in MBA/EMBA education programmes appointed by the Dean. For those shortlisted candidates, classroom observation and interviews/presentations may be arranged as part of the selection process.


There are at most six Faculty Development Awards to be given out each year subject to funding availability. Each awardee will be given a cash award of HK$50,000.
