- Personalized Instruction where each individual matters
CityU's College of Business is the biggest in Hong Kong with over 800 students entering the BBA programme every year. Treasuring the benefits of a large and vibrant BBA programme, we also recognize the value of individual care for students. To realize the goal of Big is Small, the College continually creates initiatives that promote individualized learning.
The College has instituted a Peer-Assisted Learning Scheme which provides small group learning support and guidance for those students who find the learning material too challenging. Personal response systems in the classrooms enable students in large classes to individually respond to instructor questions, and provide instructors with instant feedback for their teaching. An on-line messaging system (helpdesk) with fast and guaranteed response lets students ask questions outside the classroom and receive an answer quickly and efficiently. Instructors have in-lecture support from tutors, who interview students with wireless microphones to permit question asking and answering. Large-class instructors are provided with photo lists of their students, thus enabling them to match faces with names and break through the otherwise de-personalized nature of large class instruction.
- Rich Learning Experiences
Learning must take place both inside and outside the classroom. We want students to learn anytime and anyplace, and to learn not only course content, but also to foster whole person development.
To facilitate learning without boundaries the College of Business draws on the resources from the CityU's Student Development Services, from departmental consultants, and student mentors. The College also creates learning experiences outside the classroom, from leadership training to internship courses, industry projects, and high-table dinners.
As a new initiative, the CB has also created an online system which enables students from the first day on to maintain an inventory of activities and experiences. This inventory can serve as a guide to steer students towards curricular and co-curricular activities. Subsequently it also becomes the source for the writing of activity-filled resumes. Beginning in 2004, students have the opportunity to join an “adventure camp”, a multi-day activity under the guidance of expert trainers, to promote self-discipline, confidence, and camaraderie.
- Integrative Learning
Breaking the boundaries of traditional departmental learning is important. While students belong to departments and programs, every BBA student should receive a comprehensive education, with an understanding of the connections between the different business disciplines.
Teaching staff cooperate actively and coordinate their learning content to achieve this level of integration. This integration takes place through formal coordination schemes, as well as less formal, yet scheduled instructor meetings. In several departments, professors hold weekly meetings to discuss learning objectives, content, and delivery.
Monthly meetings bring together staff members from all departments to share information concerning challenges, successes and new initiatives. Furthermore, we have created an e-Organization which simulates the activities of a company and demonstrates their interactivity. Students use this facility during their first year experience.
- Dedicated Instructors
The professors teaching in the BBA’s First Year are a dedicated group of individuals, seeking to continuously improve teaching performance and learning results. he College boasts many teaching excellence award winners, who apply their teaching skill and knowledge in the classroom. These staff members carefully prepare materials and use a variety of support technologies to improve the teaching delivery.
The College holds teaching seminars to share best instructional practices and to help staff members with less experience so as to reach best performance.
Professors and tutors alike are recognized for teaching innovations and performance. The College has its own award scheme to recognize excellence in First Year instruction.
- Ethics Oriented Learning
At a time when business leaders' commitment to fundamental ethical principles appears to have wavered, CityU actively promotes ethical learning by integrating basic human values in its first-year BBA curriculum.
The purpose of this approach to enhance the awareness of students regarding ethical issues and to promote the practice of core human values such as integrity, responsibility, fairness, respect, and compassion.
By incorporating ethics instruction into the regular curriculum, the College seeks to make this subject a “natural” part of every curriculum and to develop lasting and meaningful insights among the students.
