Healthcare Management Science: Two Case Examples from Major US Hospitals

Abstract: This talk will be an overview of the application of operations research to the healthcare industry, through the discussion of two separate research studies done at major US hospitals. The first example is the development of a simulation model for the emergency room at the San Francisco General Hospital to assess the impact of inpatient crowding and ambulance diversion on patient wait-times. The second case involves the stochastic modeling of the central laboratory at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to optimize lab test throughput time. These cases will serve as examples of current research being done in the healthcare management science space in the United States.
