Frequently Asked Questions

Accommodation

  1. How much do I have to pay for the Student Residence?
    Please visit the website of Student Residence for the current residence fee.

  2. When will the payment for the Student Residence be due?
    Students must settle a non-refundable and non-transferrable confirmation fee to indicate the acceptance of offer shortly upon receipt of the on-campus housing offer.

  3. Can I request for a single room at the Student Residence?
    There is a small number of typical single rooms. They will be first assigned to those who have special needs or medical reasons with supporting documents when they submit the online housing application.

  4. How is the withdrawal policy of the Student Residence?
    Confirmation fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable on all conditions.

  5. Are laundries available in University Residence?
    Yes.

  6. Is self-catering apartments available?
    No. A common room is available on each floor of the Student Residence, with basic pantry facilities, a microwave oven, a refrigerator and a TV-set.

  7. Is the University Residence close to the campus?
    The Student Residence for exchange students is situated in Whitehead, Ma On Shan. Video Tour to SR, Choi Sha Street, Ma On Shan
    It will take approximately 35-40 minutes to commute from this Student Residence to CityU.

Application

  1. When is the application deadline?
    You can apply for our Exchange programme for Semester A or Semester B. Click here for the application deadline.

  2. How can I join the Student Exchange Programme at CityU?
    We only accept exchange students nominated by our partner universities. Please contact the exchange programme coordinator or the international office at your home university for nomination.

  3. Where do I get the password for online application?
    The College of Business Exchange Office will send the login ID & password for entering our online application for the Student Exchange Programme to you once we have received the nomination from the International Coordinator in your home university.

Course Selection

  1. Are courses taught in English?
    Unless otherwise determined by the Senate for a specific course or programme, the medium of instruction and assessment at the University is English.

  2. Do inbound exchange students register for courses prior to arrival? How is this done?
    You are required to make your study plan and submit via the online application system before the application deadline. The College of Business Exchange Office will pre-register the approved courses for you subject to availability, fulfilling the prerequisite and clashes in timetable.

  3. How can I add or drop courses?
    The course add/drop information will be sent to students prior to the start of web registration period.

  4. How many credits do I need to take?
    Student should take 12 to 18 credits in a semester.

  5. What courses are offered to exchange students?
    Please refer to the course offered list at our programme website for reference.

  6. Can I change my course selection?
    You can change your course selection during the 3-week add/drop period which starts from 2 weeks before commencement of the new semester. Confirmation is subject to the approval by the concerned department.

Insurance

  1. Does CityU have any policy on health insurance for exchange students?
    It is mandatory for non-local students to have suitable and adequate insurance covering travel, personal accident, medical expenses (accident and non-accident), hospitalization and emergency evacuation/repatriation throughout the entire period of their study in Hong Kong. Students are required to either purchase the insurance on their own before they leave their home city or, if they are unable to do so or wish to have additional insurance coverage, enroll in the Group Personal Accident and Medical Benefits Insurance Plan for Non-local Students contracted by the University.

  2. Are exchange students required to purchase health insurance at CityU?
    During the online pre-enrolment process, exchange students are required to complete the declaration on insurance agreement. Students may agree to enroll in the insurance plan for non-local students arranged by CityU or declare they have purchased insurance plan at home which cover travel, persona accidents, medical expenses (accident and non-accident), hospitalization and emergency evacuation/repatriation that will be valid worldwide including Hong Kong.

Transportation

  1. How can I get to CityU from airport?
    CityU is easily accessible by various forms of public transportation. In the Orientation Week, the University will offer free airport shuttle bus service from the HK International Airport to Student Residence. Details about the shuttle bus schedule and other alternative means of transportation will be sent to you prior to arrival.

Visa

  1. Do I apply for the visa in my home country on my own?
    The College of Business at CityU will apply for the study visa on your behalf in Hong Kong. The approved visa label will be sent to you by courier once it is available. Please complete the "ID995A – Application for Entry for Study in Hong Kong" and "College of Business Visa Sponsorship and Payment Form" and send the original signed copy to our office by courier or post on or before application deadline.

  2. How long does it take for a visa application?
    The visa approval process may take up to 6 to 8 weeks or longer if the required supporting documents are incomplete. You are advised to submit the visa application documents to our office for immediate processing on or before application deadline.

  3. May I send the application forms by fax to CityU?
    No. Only the original visa application forms are accepted. The fax copy of your passport is usually too dim to identify your information and photo. Thus you are required to send all documents by courier or post.

  4. What documents should be included to complete the exchange application?

  5. What if the visa cannot be approved before I depart for Hong Kong?
    You must enter Hong Kong as visitor and after collecting the visa label in Hong Kong, please re-enter with your visa label to activate your student status.

  6. What kinds of financial statement should I provide?

  7. Does the student visa allow me to enter Mainland China, and fly to other countries?
    The Study Visa is only good for entering Hong Kong. You must apply separate visa to enter Mainland China after your arrival in Hong Kong. For details, please visit http://www.ctshk.com/english/useful/chinesevisa.htm. You have to consult the Embassy/Consulate of the other countries for visa requirements well in advance.

  8. Can I pay the visa and mailing fees by cheque?
    No, the University can only accept payment by credit card or bank draft.

  9. Do I need a visa to study in Hong Kong?
    Unless you have a Hong Kong Identity Card with the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong, you must obtain a visa/entry permit to study in Hong Kong.

Others

  1. How to open a bank account in Hong Kong?
    If you wish to open a bank account upon arrival, please bring along the following listed required documents to the bank:

    • CityU Student Card
    • Travel document (or Exit-Entry Permit for Mainland Chinese students)
    • CityU official letter of acceptance
    • Proof of residence in your home country (i.e. bank statement or utilities bill, in English or Chinese, issued to you within the past 3 months)
    • Proof of residence in Hong Kong (please request for residential proof at Student Residence Office)

  2. How to apply for CityU Physical Fitness Room User Card?
    Exchange students must attend a special one-hour briefing session including topics such as dress code, booking system, facilities charges and a video on theory based on exercise prescription before using the Physical Fitness Room.  All students (including exchange students) will be given a declaration form after attending the briefing session.

    Exchange students must sign up for the briefing session in person at the counter of Sports Complex upon arrival.  The Physical Education section will organize at least 3 daytime sessions per week conducted in English.  Students should receive their personalized Physical Fitness User Card in approximately 7-10 working days upon completion of the briefing session.
