Professor Douglas Vogel, Chair Professor of Information Systems, received the AIS Fellow Award from The Association for Information Systems on 14 December 2004. The purpose of the AIS Fellow award is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Information Systems discipline in terms of research, teaching, and service.
Douglas R. Vogel received his M.S. in Computer Science from U.C.L.A. in 1972 and his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Minnesota in 1986. He has consulted for large and small companies as well as served on numerous boards of directors. In a ten year relationship with a Colorado electronics manufacturer he served in virtually every managerial capacity including President. Professor Vogel's research interests bridge the business and academic communities in addressing questions of the impact of management information systems on aspects of interpersonal communication, group problem solving, cooperative learning, and multi-cultural team productivity. He has published widely and directed extensive research on group support systems and technology support for education. He has been ranked 3rd in a journal report of top researchers in Group Support Systems and ranked 10th in a worldwide list of top researchers in MIS as well as 4th in the list of most collaborative information systems researchers. Professor Vogel is especially active in introducing group support technology into enterprises and educational systems and is additionally researching mobile commerce and mobile e-learning applications. Profession Ting-Peng Liang, Visiting Professor of Information Systems, received the Fellow Award from the Association for Information Systems in December 2003 to recognize his outstanding contribution to the discipline of information systems discipline in terms of research, teaching, and professional development. He also received a fellow award from the Chinese Association for Technology Management in Taiwan.
Professor Liang received his MBA from National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan and his Ph.D. degree in Decision Sciences from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. Prior to joining the Department, he had taught at the University of Illinois, Purdue University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and National Sun Yat-Sen University, where he is taking a leave from the Director of Electronic Commerce Research Center. He also holds the Lifelong National Chair Professorship from the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. Professor Liang's research interests evolve from decision support systems and knowledge-based systems in the 90s to electronic commerce and knowledge management in the recent decade. He has been ranked as a top leader in e-commerce research in 1998-2004 and among the top ten highly cited Asia Pacific author. Additional detail is available at
