Research Degrees

City University of Hong Kong is one of the eight universities in Hong Kong . The business school of the university is the first in Asia to receive AACSB accreditation. The IS department, one of the six academic departments in the business school, was formed in 1990. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest and best-equipped departments of its kind in the world, with more than 600 students pursuing undergraduate and advanced degree programmes in Information Systems and Electronic Commerce. Staff members in the department regularly publish research results in major refereed international journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Communications of the Association of Computing Machinery, Decision Sciences, Decision Support Systems, and in major international conferences such as the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) etc. The department has over 20 full-time members of staff who engage in both teaching and research, many of whom have an international reputation in their specialist areas. It also attracts many prominent visiting scholars from overseas who further enhance the intellectual ambience of the Department. Of the current academic staff, 16 originate from outside Hong Kong, including Mainland China , US, UK , Singapore , Tunisia , India , Thailand and Germany . Prominent IS scholars like Prof. Izak Benbasat, Prof. Lynne Markus, Prof. Robert Zmud, Prof. Allen Lee, Prof. Ron Weber, to name a few, have visited the department in the past few years. In May 2005, the Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS) ranked the IS department fifth in the world and first outside of North America in terms of IS research publication productivity.

The College of Business has strategically identified an internationally competitive area of applied research: Knowledge and Innovation Management (KIM), while it also fosters development of other potential areas of strength, i.e. Accounting and Corporate Governance, and International Economics. Our well-established PhD programme provides advanced education to nurture people who can contribute to the advancement of knowledge through independent and original research, and to economic, social and cultural development locally and in the region. The sustainable achievements of the IS department are a consequence of the Department's recruitment policy, which aims at selecting the best candidates in both teaching and research from local and international universities as well as policies and initiatives that promote quality applied research and professional education. We invite students from all over the world, particularly India , to explore our M.Phil/Ph.D. programs and contribute towards further development of the IS department. Research students receive a studentship granted on a yearly renewable basis for a maximum of two years for M.Phil and three years for PhD students. The studentship rate is HK$12,860 per month for 2005-06. In addition, Research Tuition Scholarship that exempts full-time students from paying one year's fees is also awarded to recognise and reward students with outstanding academic performance.
