Abstract:

Community source is a very recent phenomenon for co-developing enterprise applications by sharing resources and reducing risks among user firms.  A fundamental condition of successful co-development of enterprise applications is long-term sustainability of a healthy community of dedicated member firms.  As such, understanding how to attract long-term commitment to co-development from user firms is essential for managing community source projects successfully.  However, there is a lack of research in the literature that offers direct insights and guidance on how to make a co-development community sustainable for the long term.  While co-development is not new in the area of commercial products, it is quite new to co-develop software to be used by partner firms that may have little or no commercial value. In this paper, we tackle this research issue via economic analysis on how community is shaped by making policies that attract user firms and sustain the community simultaneously.  To make the analytical model tractable, we first focus on two factors of sustainability, namely licensing policy by the community and investment decisions by potential community members. Our initial research has yielded some interesting, sometimes counterintuitive, results that should provide useful insights to stakeholders of community source as well as relevant researchers. Another important contribution of our research is the establishment of a basic and formal research framework on community source amendable to empirical assessment.
