A Very Good Start of CityU MBA Cohort 2018
More than 120 guests joined the MBA Orientation banquet dinner hosted by the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme on 1 September 2018 outside campus. Guests, faculty, staff, alumni and students were invited to witness the exciting MBA journey that the cohort 2018 students were set to embark on.
The banquet dinner was the feature event of the two-day intensive MBA Orientation on 1 & 2 Sep 2018 comprising a series of career workshops, SHARP Forum workshop, team building activities, and alumni sharing. Prof Kevin Chiang, MBA Director welcomed students in the opening session and encouraged them to step out of their comfort zone to embrace new challenges throughout the MBA journey.
In the welcome address of the orientation dinner, Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College of Business shared some recent developments of the College and praised the achievement and progress that MBA programme has made in the recent years. He was delighted to see the diverse background of the new cohort from various industries and countries like Netherlands, Nepal, etc.
Mr Henry Fan Hung Ling, SBS, JP brought an inspiring keynote speech to the audiences. He shared three important reminders from his 30 years of business management experience. He stressed that the most important reminder is “integrity”. “Never compromise your integrity of honesty and moral principle because if you don’t, you will never know when it comes back to haunt you”, Mr Fan said. Then, he continued to share his second and third important reminders on “wisdom” and “facing adversity”, which pointed out the difference between wise and smart and how important for us to be prepared for adversity anytime with his own story as examples. With the three key matters shared, he wished the students every success while moving forward to the new pages in career and life.
Also attending the orientation dinner were Prof Frank Chen, Head of Department of Management Sciences, Dr Christoph Schneider, MBA Associate Director, Dr Wilson Chan, MBA Associate Director of Outreach, Dr Maggie Dong, MBA Coordinator in Marketing, and Ms Cynthia Hui, SHARP Forum Supervisor.
We were grateful to have our students Jane Li and Jason Chen from Cohort 2017 to be the masters of ceremony and their sharing on the stage showcased the quality of the CityU MBA. We were also thankful to have Tommy Tang (Cohort 2015) who came all the way across the broader for the piano performance. Not to mention about Frances Tang (Cohort 2005), the headmistress of a harp school who has just won a Harp and Vocal Prize with Eunice Suen, the soprano singer at an international music competition at Berlin, Germany specially prepared a beautiful harp and singing recital performance to conclude a fruitful ending of the orientation banquet.
2018 MBA Orientation was a great appetizer for the new cohort before the start of the programme, their main dish. We hope all of them enjoyed to build new friendships in the community and the orientation activities prepped them to have a very good start of the MBA journey ahead.
