Managing Money-Back Guarantees and Consumer Returns: Implications for Retailer Strategy
Abstract: |
Retailers of experience goods often offer money-back guarantees (MBGs), which allow consumers to return non-defective items within a certain time window. The justification for MBGs is that the value of an experience good is not fully realized by the consumer until after the purchase is made, and thus a “trial period” is needed to fully assess fit. However, the impact of MBGs and consumer returns on firm operations is still not well-understood, and numerous open research questions remain. This seminar will discuss several current research inquiries related to the retailer issues arising from MBG and
consumer returns, including: consumer returns forecasting, in-store strategies to reduce returns, and quantifying the value to consumers of an MBG policy. |
