BBA students win the Championship in ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition 2015

Congratulations to CityU BBA students for winning the Champion and Best Team Spirit Awards at the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition 2015 (Degree Category), organised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) on 21st November. CityU was also awarded the Top Participating Institute (Degree), for its highest number of student participation in the competition.

Since its launch in 2007, the ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition is highly regarded as an arena to showcase the students’ business talent and to combine their accounting skills with social responsibilities. This year, ACCA partnered with HKCSS-HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre (SEBC) and set the competition theme as “Building a Better Society, Stronger Business: YOUTH can do it”. The competition attracted approximately 400 entries and 1,700 students to submit their proposals. The competing teams had to suggest a sustainable business model, with a two-year funding plan of HK$2 million, to build a better society for a particular group of beneficiaries.

The Team Empowered Advisory Services from Youth (EASY), consisted of four BBA students from the Department of Accountancy and the Department of Marketing, won the Champion and the Best Team Spirit Awards (Degree) out of the seven finalists in the competition. The Team proposed a business model that could provide low-income community in Hong Kong with efficient and affordable legal, tax and accounting services, offering the needy people a better access to professional services.

Members of the winning team EASY are:

Angel Long-Yin Kan, BBA in Accountancy
Jade Wing-Yee Tam, BBA in Accountancy
Louise Sz-Wing Yeung, BBA in Accountancy
Dickie Kiu-Chun Lam, BBA in China Business

Louise Yeung, the leader of Team EASY, said, “We hope to contribute to society as much as possible, such as earmarking a certain amount of business profit for social good. We believe this is the genuine way to develop a business into an entrepreneurial company.”

“It is our first time to take part in a business stimulation competition. With very brief idea on how to set up a business, we spent much time on brainstorming ideas before coming up with our proposal. We are glad that the judges recognised our project ideas.” Louise said.

Jade Tam, one of the winning team members, concluded her experience, “This is a very interesting, hands-on experience to create a new business plan out of nothing. I’m grateful to have much support from my teammates along the way. It’s happy to see our plan becoming feasible and leading us to success!”
