Dr Steven Poon highlights major developments on energy use


Dr Steven Poon, Chairman of Bright World Exterprise Limited and the former General Manager of CLP Company Ltd, delivered a lecture on the topic “Energy – Where Do We Go From Here” at Eminence Galaxy – Alumni Function Room, Academic 3, on 7th January. The lecture was part of the City Seminar Series, organised by the College of Business. Over 70 students, alumni and external guests attended the lecture.

Dr Poon’s career extends to major areas of energy and his work is influential to the industry. He was responsible in many well-known energy projects including the Castle Peak Coal-fired Power Station, Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, Pumped-Storage Hydro-electric Power Station and the off-shore natural gas development plan. Dr Poon was also dedicated in contributing back to society. He served as the Legislative Councillor from 1991 to 1995 and was the founding member of the University Council of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

With his extensive knowledge in the energy field, Dr Poon ran through the history of the use of energy in his lecture. He explained in details the different types of energy, namely, oil, coal, gas, hydro, nuclear and sustainable energy; how energy is consumed by people, and challenges we will encounter in the future. Dr Poon concluded his lecture in introducing the latest developments in the industry which may change the future trend in energy consumption.

About the City Seminar

The City Seminar 香港席明納  has been initiated by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, with the aim to discuss topics together (席Xí), to understand such topics in depth (明Míng), and to gain something of value from the discussions (納Nà). The College will be inviting a number of professors and/or scholars to explore various topics during the series.
