CB students showcase their innovative projects at CityU Discovery Festival 2016


The CityU Discovery Festival 2016 took place on campus from 1st to 3rd February to appreciate students’ achievements in the areas of discovery, innovation, and creativity fostered by the Discovery-enriched Curriculum (DEC).

The festival kicked-off with an Opening Ceremony cum Teaching Excellence Awards Presentation. The University was honoured to invite Mr Nicholas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology of HKSAR Government, as the officiating guest. Prof Way Kuo, President, Prof Arthur Ellis, Provost, and Prof Horace Ip, Vice-President (Student Affairs) and Mr Robert Lui, Convocation Vice-Chairman also attended the event.

Mr Yang delivered a speech at the ceremony on the importance of innovation and technology talents. He highlighted that the government is committed to giving full support to start-ups and incubation schemes. “These start-ups can turn inspiration and innovation into real life applications for the benefits of our economy and society,” he said.

He also encouraged CityU students to step out of the box, and to make good use of the support and available resources from the University and to shape the entrepreneurship culture in Hong Kong.

Prof Kuo said the new Innovation and Technology Bureau that Mr Yang heading would help Hong Kong develop further into a knowledge-based economy and an innovation hub for technology. He added that CityU also sees innovation is a key to the future and its pioneering DEC would help nurture the creativity of our students.

CB students unleashed their power of creativity and imagination through innovative projects. Their achievements were showcased in the DEC 2.0 Exhibition in the Festival.  The projects include:

  1. iWear Closet - An Innovation to Help Choose the Right Clothes from Our Closets Efficiently
    Supervisor:   Dr Terence Cheung, Assistant Professor of the Department of Information Systems
    Members:     Brian Lin, Feigay Chung, Issac Hung and Sky Ip
    Students from the Department of Information Systems

This project received Silver Award at Hong Kong U-21 Internet of Things (IoT) Awards (IoT Revolution Concept) and Most Innovative Award at Hong Kong-Taiwan IoT Academia Awards 2014.

  1. MyDreamPal - A High Intelligence Pen to Help Improve Primary Students’ English
    Supervisor:   Ms Wisteria Cheung, Senior Teaching Fellow of the Department of Marketing
    Members:     Beverly Mok, Crystal Fu and Pansy Chung
    Students from the Department of Marketing

The festival offered a series of events, including project exhibitions, Majors and Minors Fair, International Culture Carnival, departmental information seminars, tea reception and gatherings with academic staff.
