Drawing inspiration from university management in the US


Dr David Cheng Xing, Associate Vice President (Global Services), CityU, presented the topic of The American University: From Ideas to Management at City Seminar. The seminar was held on 21st April at the Eminence Galaxy – Alumni Function Room.  Over 70 faculty members, guests, alumni and students attended the event.

Dr Cheng is experienced in tertiary education management. He previously served as the Assistant Dean at the Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia University. He was the Executive Director for international dual degree programs in the Office of the Provost, and the Adjunct Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University.  Dr Cheng also led the Columbia Global Center in Beijing and took up the position as Executive Director. Over the years, Dr Cheng has accumulated extensive experience in education management and produced numerous publications on areas of higher education research and administration.

During the Seminar, Dr Cheng shared his insights and findings in operating a university, using American universities as successful examples to explain the uniqueness in curriculum design, admissions, student affairs, assessment and accreditation, etc. He also presented the education management system from historical views as well as the government’s supportiveness on research grants, tuition subsidies and information management.

About the City Seminar

The City Seminar 香港席明納 was initiated by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, with an aim to discuss topics together (席Xí), to understand such topics in depth (明Míng), and to gain something of value from the discussions (納Nà). The College will invite a number of professors and/or scholars to explore various topics during the Seminar.
