Congratulations to Department of Management Sciences for being No.1 in Asia

The Department of Management Sciences (MS) is ranked 1st in Asia, 23rd in the world in the latest UTD Top 100 Business School Research RankingsTM, based on research contributions in top journals* for the period from 2012 to 2016.

MS is specialised in two major areas of expertise: business analysis and operations management. In addition to offering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the Department maintains close relationship with the industry and government agencies through consultancy projects. Currently, MS has 59 on-going funded projects totalling HK$25 million, and 29 of them are supported by the government.

Two undergraduate programmes of different focus: Business Analysis and Business Operations Management, offered by MS are well received by students, and employers also showed great appreciations to graduates from these courses. Dr Iris Yeung Miu-han, Associate Professor of the Department of Management Sciences and Programme Leader of BBA in Business Analysis, explained the Department’s aspirations of having these programmes, “We offer up-to-date, innovative programmes to our students, training them to meet industry needs in the era of big data and operational efficiency.”

“We provide various subsidies and support to the students, and encourage them to take professional examinations before they graduate. We aim to prepare them with analytic ability and practical skills to take up managerial positions.”

Dr Stephen Shum Wan-hang, Associate Professor of the Department of Management Sciences and Programme Leader of BBA in Business Operations Management, said, “Our slogan ‘Ideas to Actions’ means that we want our students to have an innovative mind, to possess the confidence and great presentation skills to communicate their ideas to others, and are able to execute these ideas practically at the same time.”

“We have various elective courses covering a wide range of areas to cater individual interests of students, and collaborated with different industry partners to provide company visits and real-life consultancy projects for students.”

In addition to hard and soft skills training, the Department also offers extensive internship and overseas exchange opportunities for students to advance themselves.

Chris Lam Wang, BBA Business Analysis, who had an exchange study at San Francisco State University, USA, said, “Studying abroad was an eye-opening experience. It also provided me a good platform to make friends from different countries, and to travel around the world. I am now more aware of the culture diversity and learning styles between places.”

Yannie Wong Wun-yin, BBA Business Analysis, took a study trip to the European Business School, International University Schloss Reichartshausen in Germany, believed that the exchange experience has made her more proactive in learning, “German students are active learners. They are eager to ask questions or voice out opinions in class. Being influenced by them, I am now more confident to express my ideas.”

Xanis Tam Hoi-ching, BBA Business Operations Management, who has participated in the special project collaborated between MS Department and 759 Store, and worked as an intern in Cold Storage Singapore, recalled her memories in these internship experiences, “I worked as a front-line staff, to do quality check to ensure goods sold in the store are in best condition. To get myself prepared in the operation environment, I train myself to be sensitive and observant to the surroundings. Any small details can result in great impact on the products. I always remind myself ‘retailing is about detailing’ and it is true all the time”.

Another BBA Business Operations Management student, Jonathan Lu Chun-yu, shared his experiences working at Deloitte and a Sydney boutique consultancy firm Sandwalk Partners, “My time at Deloitte as an audit intern enabled me to gain insights about different companies' financials and operation environment. I have also acquired essential skill set that helps my career progression in the future. While in my job at Sydney, I developed a tracking system for the company to overview their budget and sales income. These jobs were very challenging, yet made me thrilled.”
