The coming of 5G mobile communications


Prof Quan Xue, Associate Head and Chair Professor of Microwave Engineering, of the Department of Electronic Engineering, discussed “The Coming 5G Mobile Communications Opportunities and Threats”in the City Seminar held on 20th April.

In the seminar, Prof Xue reviewed the history of the five generations of wireless communication systems, namely, 0G, 1G, 2G, 3G, & 4G. He also provided an in-depth explanation of the coming new mobile generation, 5G, on its special features, the possible opportunities and threats, as well as the application in meeting demand from businesses and customers.

Prof Xue received his PhD degree in electronic engineering from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 1993. He first started as a lecturer there and became a professor in 1997. He has authored or co-authored over 300 internationally referred journal papers and over 160 international conference papers. He is a co-inventor of a number of granted Chinese and US patents. His research interests include microwave/millimeter-wave/THz passive components, active components, antenna, microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMIC), and radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC) etc.

About City Seminar 

The City Seminar 香港席明納 was initiated by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, with an aim to discuss topics together (席Xí), to understand such topics in depth (明Míng), and to gain something of value from the discussions (納Nà). Professors and/or scholars are invited to explore a wide range of topics during the series.
