JOS Innovation Awards 2017-2018

Students from different majors: Jeremy Leung Ka-ming, BBA Information Management, Rica Ng Chak-lam, BEng Information Engineering and Thomas Tse Ho-yin, BBA Marketing, teamed up with Grayson Ho Yik-chung from the University of Hong Kong, and Michelle Lee Wing-yu from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, won the 1st runner-up in the JOS Innovation Awards 2017-2018. Their winning project was “Algotritionist”.

The theme of this year competition is “Happy Ageing – Innovation Healthcare Solution”. Focusing on these two areas, “Ageing population” and “healthcare”, student contestants utilized the use of IOT (Internet of Things), mobile operation and internet solution to develop an innovation, which could help taking care of the elderly and thus enhancing their quality of life. In the contest, nine out of 48 teams from different tertiary institutions were shortlisted to the final competition.  Their works were required to meet the practical needs of the elderly and their products be marketable.

The student team proposed a solution “Algotritionist” which aims to alleviate the stress that home caregivers are facing and to improve meal management efficiency, by placing a system with algorithms. The system will suggest to caregivers possible meals combinations that are suitable for the elderly, and keep track of the elderly’s consumption of different food elements. These data will be provided to doctors for more precise treatment and nutrition plan.

A team member Jeremy Leung explained the idea of the solution, “There is an increasing number of aging population, and the demand of elderly home service and caregivers will certainly increase. We anticipate to see more high quality services and products for elderly targeting the high-end customers in the consumer market, and with innovation we can suggest better healthcare solutions.”

Since 2015, the JOS Innovation Awards aim to inspire and nurture students in Hong Kong for their smart ideas and innovative thinking in improving industry performance. The competition is a holistic programme that gives students exposure to the working world and expert mentorship. Under the guidance of JOS mentors, student teams can learn about the industry knowledge, sharpen their presentation skills, and build upon their innovative projects.
