In collaboration with the researchers’ social network platform ScholarMate, the Department of Information Systems conducted an integrated analysis and comparison on the research and innovation development of 11 cities under the Greater Bay Area, by using the big data collected from the platform.

A press conference of the report was held on 21 November. Professor Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, gave a welcoming remark and shared his insights on the technology breakthroughs and development in Chinese cities in the recent years, followed by a presentation by Professor Jian Ma who analysed and explained the findings of the study.

The report pointed out that even Hong Kong still keeps its advantage on GDP and basic research, areas on technology talents, capital investment and number of patents have already been surpassed by nearby cities such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Professor Ma concluded that Hong Kong is facing three major challenges, namely on,  technology and innovation talents, planning of Hong Kong-based emerging industries, as well as resources and support for local tech firms. He suggested that the government can make reference to China’s 13th Five-year plan for designing Hong Kong’s own emerging industries and collaborate with higher institutions to nurture talents in the field.
