Young Scholars Programme celebrates its 10th anniversary

Young Scholars Programme (YSP) Mentoring cum Student Presentation 2019 was held on 8 April, where YSP members, external and internal mentors and the College’s management team spent an enjoyable evening together.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the YSP. Launched in 2009, the programme aims to nurture outstanding undergraduate students to become future leaders via various learning activities including overseas study tours, leadership trainings, mentorship, internship and community services, etc. The Mentoring cum Student Presentation gathering allows YSP students to reflect on YSP experience and share it with their mentors.

Professor Horace Ip, Vice-President (Student Affairs) of CityU gave a welcome speech to open the ceremony. Professor Ip commended on all the accomplishments YSP has achieved over the last decade, he also announced new elements of the programme. YSP students can now gain more insights on academic topics in all the six departments through seminars and workshops in every semester. To name some, in Semester A 2019-20, Dr Roy Ho from the Department of Information Systems will host a workshop on “Blockchain and Cryptocurrency”, followed by a talk on “Business Case Competition” by Dr Zachary Leung from the Department of Management Sciences.

The event also included a presentation by a final year YSP student, Valent Cheung from Global Business Systems Management, on his stories of exchange studies in Aalto University School of Business, Finland and Peking University in Mainland China. He also share how he established ElderTreks with his friends at CityU. ElderTreks is an NGO that promotes local tours led by elders. Valent encouraged all YSP members to keep on trying new things during the four-year university journey.

Wendy Yim who graduated from the Department of Accountancy in 2012 brought another inspiring presentation on her YSP journey. She was an alumnus from the very first batch of YSP. She had worked in PwC as an auditor before joining a commercial firm for the current role as a Finance Manager.

Also attended the event were Professor Houmin Yan, Dean of the College of Business,  Dr Raymond Wong, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programmes), as well as programme mentors Fergus Wong from PwC and John Chong from Deloitte.
