City Seminar invites University Distinguished Professor to deliver lecture


Prof Chain-tsuan Liu, University Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Advanced Structural Materials, Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at the College of Science and Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, explored the topic of Materials, Civilization, and Technology Innovation (材料文明與科技創新) at Eminence Galaxy – Alumni Function Room, Academic 3 on 15th October. The lecture was part of the City Seminar Series, organized by the College of Business.

Over 75 students, faculty members, and guests attended the lecture. Prof Liu is a renowned member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and an academician of Academia Sinica Taiwan. He dedicates himself to the pioneer work on mechanistically understanding the brittle fracture in intermetallic alloys and intergranular fracture in noble refractory alloys. Prof Liu has published more than 500 journal papers and is honoured as one of the world leaders in the field of intermetallic and metallic materials.

Prof Liu suggested that the quality of life highly depends on the application of materials which have been discovered, invented, and transformed. A successful development and application of new materials are the basis for measuring the well-being of the society. ”The rapid development and implementation of new materials is the major driving force of technology innovation.” Prof Liu concluded.

About the City Seminar

The City Seminar 香港席明納  has been initiated by Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, with the aim to discuss topics together (席Xí), to understand such topics in depth (明Míng), and to gain something of value from the discussions (納Nà). The College will be inviting a number of professors and/or scholars to explore various topics during the series.
