Japan Study Tour
The Japan Study Tour is a voluntary summer trip for students to Japan, and has been running continuously for over ten years. The participants are mostly Year-2 students majoring in International Business, Japan Studies (IBJ). The program is entirely optional and usually attracts around 17 students per year (around 50% of the Year-2 IBJ majors). The tour is a student-run activity and students are welcome to organize it in any way they like. However, staff in the Department of Management provide students with a considerable amount of logistical support and advice and the Department sponsors a staff member to accompany the students for at least part of the tour. In recent years, the tours have had three major components: 1) company and university visits; 2) intensive language study and/or home stay; and 3) travel through Japan. Often students participate in all three components of the tour, but some students skip components of the tour (for example, company visits) for budgetary reasons or because of time constraints. In recent years, most participants have stayed in Japan for a total of one to two months. Both the Student Development Services office and the Department of Management have kindly provided sponsorship. While this sponsorship has definitely been very helpful and sincerely appreciated, the students still have pay for the bulk of the expenses on their own. What students gain from the tour include: 1) strong, personal impressions of Japanese business and management; 2) strong, personal impressions of Japanese culture and society; 3) improved proficiency and confidence in the Japanese language; and 4) new friendships. In addition, students often gain greater self-awareness and self-understanding, a deeper appreciation and understanding of their own culture and society, and increased self-confidence and maturity.
