After the success of the Career Workshop in 2016, the Department of Management held the event again this year. Over 150 students participated in this event which took place on the 23rd April 2017 at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. The workshop was entitled ‘Explore, Connect and Succeed: How to Build a Successful Career’ whereby top company representatives came to give their insights and advice. This year, representatives came from companies including HAECO, Hospital Authority, Korn Ferry, Mannings, Milestone, Pricerite, Prudential and UL.

The event focused on the three main themes – ‘Explore, Connect and Succeed’. Professionals gave their personal insights on topics including interview preparation, career planning, taking time out to explore the world and people networking. Students were actively engaged in the Q and A sessions and were inspired by the advice that they were given. 

Dr. Christina Sue-Chan, Associate Head of the Department of Management, opened the career workshop with some inspirational remarks. She drew on her own experience in finding the right career and encouraged the students at the event to learn from top professionals and alumni during the day. Christina also took the opportunity to express her gratitude to all the company representatives and alumni for supporting the event.

Dr Andy Kwan, Instructor of the Department of Management, facilitated the alumni panel discussion. The students were keen in asking our alumni on building a successful career.

Doreen Cheng, Director of the Sales and Marketing Division at Mannings, gave her insights on the true meaning of being successful. With over 20 years of brand management experience, she gave an inspiring talk on the importance of understanding yourself in order to succeed. 

Victor Ching, Director of Milestone Talent and Child Psychological Department Association (CPDA), shared his journey in career development. He provided useful career and interview tips and believed the three main attributes which contributed to success were attitude, skills and knowledge.  

Andy Lui, Senior Consultant at Korn Ferry Hay Group, gave insightful tips on building a successful career. Drawing on from Andy’s personal work experience, Andy focused on six main concepts- being yourself, proactive, thoughtful, flexible, mature and professional. Andy believed that these six main concepts were essential in his professional development

Kason Fok (RIGHT) is an Associate Director at the Convoy Financial Services Limited with over 8-year experience in the financial sector. Kason focused on the difference between a job and a career and also drew on the fact that student’s should go and explore the world early on. He encouraged students’ to participate in a gap year. Kason also shared his inspirational experiences such as completing the 250km ultra marathon challenge across the Sahara Desert in 2012, the North Pole Marathon in 2013 and the Antarctic Ultra Marathon in 2015. 

Alvin Leung (LEFT) General Manager, Intelligence SMC Consulting Ltdhas been working withIntelligence consulting since 2006, overseeing both recruitment and HR management consultancy. He shared with the student on his experience in permanent placement, temporary staffing/contracting and executive search.

Gladys Liu, a consultant at Cog’s Agency, gave her personal experiences of working in a consulting firm in China. Gladys gave insightful tips on how to find job for fresh graduates and also how to find the next job. Students were keen to find out about her working experiences in China whereby she actively encouraged the students’ to seek the opportunities in China due to its growing potential. 

Edmond Poon, Assistant Manager of the Sales Training and Development Operations at Pricerite, gave a talk on career planning and goal setting. Edmond believed it is important for students to set specific and manageable career goals.
