In these courses, students can acquire a comprehensive understanding of management systems and practices in China, the Chinese political and economic systems, patterns of business operations in China, and business strategies adopted by different types of firms. Other than regular lectures, we rely on a variety of teaching methods, including guest lectures, company visits, interviews and group projects, to facilitate students' learning and to keep them in touch with most up-to-date information.

Students of China business need to be very familiar with the traditional Chinese culture, the impacts of Western cultures on it, how it has evolved in this century, and how it is preserved in overseas Chinese societies. Courses such as China Business Environment, Chinese Culture and Management, and Relationships in Chinese Organizations are designed for the needs. The emphases are on business matters as well as societal and interpersonal issues. Thus, laws and ethics, values and belief, cooperation and conflicts, risks and crisis management, and socialization and psychological adjustment are covered in these courses. The purpose is to train students to become well-rounded business people.

Interactive Learning in Beijing

  • The "China Management Workshop in Beijing", co-organized by us and the University of International Business and Economics, is a major event in the three-year study of our students. During the workshop last year, renowned professors in China were invited to give lectures on the topics of Foreign Exchange Control and Asian Financial Crisis, Reforms of State-Owned Enterprises, China's Foreign Trade System, Development of Foreign Direct Investment, China's Political and Economic Environment, and Strategy of China's Economic Development. Accompanying the lectures were visits to companies including Shougang Cooperation and Beijing Matsushita Precision Capacitor Co. Ltd. (Panasonic). Furthermore, our students had the opportunity to meet and interact with business students in Beijing. All students had learned a lot in these activities.

Business Consultancy Experience in China

  • In the final semester of their three-year study, the China Business majors arranged a business consultancy in Guangdong Province. The consultancy, as a project of the course Managing Business Operations in China, aimed at gaining hands-on experience in administering Chinese enterprises. Four teams were formed, each was responsible for the diagnosis of one of the four enterprises. Each team spent several days at the enterprise, making observations of managerial problems. Based on these observations and other research conducted in the enterprise, each team came up with a detailed report on the performance of the enterprise and the problems it encountered, and proposed solutions to deal with each problem. This was a precious opportunity for students to practice what they had learned in the previous years. Most important of all, this experience could not acquired from textbooks.
