APEC Study Center |
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) consists of 21 member economies which diverge to a great extent in terms of population, terrirory, economic development and cultural background. APEC, however, does not regard the diversity as an impediment to its economic cooperation but a basis for it. For cooperation from diversity, it is necessary to promote mutual knowledge and understandings among the member economies.
In November 1993, the APEC Economic Leaders' summit in Seattle gave birth to the concept of the APEC Study Centers. To implement this initiative, APEC member economies agreed at a meeting in May 1994 the establishment of APEC Study Center in existing universities and research institutions in the member economies by each government to study various issues concerning APEC and its region. Presently, there are over 50 Study Centers spread out among universities and research institutions in 21 member economies.
The mission of the APEC Study Center in individual economies is to pursue the following objectives:
- To promote research in APEC-related subjects
- To educate students on APEC-related subjects and encourage their interests in APEC
- To disseminate their study results and information to the public
The APEC Study Center at the City University of Hong Kong was established in 1997 at the request of the Hong Kong Government in response to the APEC Leader's Meetings in 1994. Presently, the Center is under the College of Business at City University of Hong Kong.
