In the late May 2025, our DAO students took part in a journey to Sydney, Australia! We connected with industry leaders in logisticsm transport, and trade, and even got a taste of university life at UNSW and the University of Sydney!
Especially in our visit to the University of Sydney, our students could meet passionate local students and were captivated by the strong community spirit and the importance of mentorship, particularly with professors such as Professor Choi. They loved exploring the well-designed business school, which fostered collaboration and supported their aspirations for higher education. They felt the power of interdisciplinary approaches and the value of networking. Our students had opened their eyes to the culture of inquiry and creativity at the university, urging them to step out of their comfort zones and engage more actively in conversations.
In our visit to Hutchison Ports Australia at the Sydney Terminal, our students gained invaulable exposure to how data analysis drives global operations management logistics. Depsite its small scale, the terminal efficiently handles high volumes of container movement through data-driven planning and resource allocation. They were particularly fascinated by their use of operational data to optimize yard space, coordinate vessel schedules and prevent bottlenecks, especially with constraints like airport height limits and limited automation. Our students also thought their response to COVID-19 disruptions really stood out, showcasing the importance of data tracking for crisis management.
We also explored the city's iconic spots, from the Opera House to Manly Beach, and spent an afternoon up close with Aussie wildlife! This study tour not only broadened the students' perspectives, but also deepened their appreciation for global education. It was a week of new ideas, fresh perspectives and great memories.
The MS department organized the Nanjing Study Tour in mid May 2024 and it was a tremendous success! It seamlessly blended technological marvels with cultural splendors.
The company visits to Freetech Road Recycling Technology (Holdings) Limited, Nanjing Tianjia Air Conditioning Equipment Limited Company and Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute showcased Nanjing's status as an innovation hub, pushing the boundaries of technological advancements.
Our exploration to Niushou Mountain, The Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Nanjing Fuzimiao allowed us to immerse ourselves in the city's vibrant history and cultural heritage, fostering a deep appreciation for Chinese traditions.
Through the university visit to Southeast University, we have shared our learning experience in Hong Kong with the local students and professors. This visit truly provided inevitable opportunities for our students to exchange insights towards the global issues, academic studies and career prospects with others.
After the 3-year pandemic, the MS department finally could be able to organize a study tour for BANL students to Tokyo, Japan! In mid May 2023, 30 BANL students participated in the Tokyo Study Tour, allowing them to experience the world beyond their textbooks.
The tour provided an opportunity to attend seminars and workshops at the esteemed Waseda University (早稲田大学), where students participated in interactive discussions and presented analytical results. It also exposed the students to new ideas and perspectives in their fields of study.
Besides the academic component, this study tour also included visits to prominent government organizations and companies, such as the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, National Statistics Centre, Coca-Cola Tama Factory, Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Centre, Asahi Factory, Tokyo Stock Exchange, and Bank of Japan. These visits broadened students' perspectives and gave them valuable insights into statistics, banking and finance, manufacturing, operations, and other fields. Apart from that, it provided the students with a firsthand look at the inner workings of these entities and the opportunity to ask questions and learn from professionals in the industries.
Of course, a study tour completes with some leisure activites. The students had a blast sightseeing at the Asakusa Temple and teamLab Planets TOKYO, which allowed them to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and better understand the country's history and traditions. We look forward to the next study tour in the coming academic year!
In order to broaden overseas exposure of students, as well as aligning with University’s strategic goal of globalization, BANL organized the Tokyo Study Tour in late May 2019. We believe students could learn outside the classroom through this all-round study tour.
During the tour, BANL students attended seminars and workshops at Waseda University and Chuo University. Through delivering seminars to present the analytical results, students learnt abundantly from the interactive discussions and Q&A sessions.
The tour also involved some site visits of government organizations, which included National Statistics Centre and Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Centre. Through the visit, students not only could see data collection instruments and records, but also received emergency training for fire and earthquake disasters.
Moreover, students had opportunities to visit four companies. Visiting Tokyo Stock Exchange Ltd., it fostered students’ knowledge of risk management. Visiting some internationally renowned companies, namely Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. Oppama Plant, Asahi Factory and NHK Studio Park, it allowed students to enrich business knowledge on product manufacturing and development, operations and marketing.
Nevertheless, this tour balanced the academic and cultural learning satisfactorily by embodying sightseeing activities in Leimen Asakusa Temple, Sky Tree, etc. The journey created a fun and valuable learning experience for BANL students, providing them with a wonderful opportunity to explore and acquire new knowledge in different cultural context.
