Assessment for admission is generally based on the applicant's:

• Academic and professional qualifications, and working experience; and/or
• Satisfactory performance in an interview or test; and/or
• Demonstration of sufficient command of the English language; and/or
• Satisfying any other criteria as required by the respective programme(s).

Applicants will be required to produce their original certificates for the qualifications listed in their application forms at the time of enrolment for verification purposes. Any false and misleading information given in th e form will lead to disqualification of the application.

For JUPAS applicants: Selection is mostly based on the applicant's public examination results, subjects taken and his choice of programmes. For applicants recommended through the School Principal's Nominations Subsystem of JUPAS and the Unive rsity's Outstanding Student Athletes Admission Scheme, their non-academic performance will also be considered.

The non-JUPAS route or “direct application” is for applicants who do not have Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) results, or have those results but also possess other qualifications. As direct applicants are selected based on a variety of qualifications, which may include GCEAL, International Baccalaureate Diploma, Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), sub-degrees, bachelor’s degrees or other acceptable qualifications, selection is made on an individual basis. Performance in selection tests and interviews, where applicable, is also an important assessment criterion.

If you have studied at another post-secondary institution, you may be eligible for credit transfer from some programme requirements. Normally, credit transfer is granted after a student is admitted to a programme on a course-by-course basis. However, some programmes have special arrangements allowing for approval of credit transfer prior to admission. Details of these special arrangements can be found in the programme descriptions. Credits earned outside the University will not be counted in the calculation of the student's Grade Point Ave rage and classification of award. Furthermore, at least half of the credit units required for the award must be earned by successful completion of courses of the University.

If your plan is to study a progr amme on a short-term basis, that is, within one academic year, you are welcome to apply for admission as occasional or visiting students. Occasional/visiting students will be admitted only if the relevant Head of Department/Division/School is satisfied with their academic suitability and if there are places in the lecture groups for the course(s)/programme concerned.

If you are interested in attending the lectures of a particular course, but do not wish to take its examination, you may apply for admission as an occasional students.

Visiting Students

If you are interested in attending lectures in a particular course and are prepared to take its examination as specified in the programme scheme, you may apply for admission as a visiting student. No qualifications are awarded to visiting students in respect of their studies at the University. However, they can apply for a testimonial or an academic transcript at the Registrar's Office.

The University welcomes applications from non-Hong Kong residents. Such applicants are normally admitted to study on a full-time basis, as it is difficult for them to obtain a student visa as a part-time student.

Limited residential facilities are available on campus for non-Hong Kong residents taking full-time studies.

The normal medium of instruction and assessment at the University is English. However, individual staff members may use Chine se at their discretion to explain and clarify particular points. For programmes requiring a level of attainment in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) in their entrance requirements, applicants are expected to be proficient in Chinese.

The application information that you have submitted via the JUPAS Office is sent to the University on a regular basis. We will also receive the public examination results of applicants from the Hong Kong Examinations Authority. The information will help us identify those app licants who meet the entrance requirements of our programmes. Admission scores based on public examination results will then be calculated, to facilitate our academic departments to select applicants for admission.

All recognized public examination results are considered. If you have taken the examination in a subject more than once in the past six years, only the best result for the subject will be counted towards the calculation of admission score. No points will be deducted for repeated subjects.

In applying the admission score, preference may be given to students with higher band choices and good interview performance, where applicable. For students with the same score, reference will be made to other information.

It varies from year to year. Our records for the past few years show that around 10%-15% of our entrants come from the non-JUPAS route.

No. You can only choose one route. The JUPAS Guide states that: "If you have obtained HKDSE results as well as other qualifications ... you can apply either through JUPAS or directly to the institutions. However, you can only choose to apply through one of these two routes. If you apply both through JUPAS and to the institutions directly, your direct applications to the institutions will not be considered."

You may apply for admission only if your qualifications (such as GCEAL results, completion of grade 13 for bachelor's degree programmes, grade 12 for associate degree programmes) are deemed equivalent to HKDSE entry requirements.

Yes. You can submit an application. We will consider the qualifications you have attained, including your HKDSE and your university exam results. Note that your application should not be made through JUPAS. Send your application direct to the University.

Tuition Fees (subject to annual review):
For government-funded programmes, the tuitions fee for international students is HKD120,000 per annum (~USD15,380)  for 2013/14. The tuition fee may increase if there are changes to the tuition fee set by the HKSAR Government.

Accommodation
For undergraduate halls, the residence fees vary according to the room type. The residence fees are subject to annual review. Please refer to the website of Student Residence Office for details. For accommodation outside campus, the rental could be in the range of USD1000-USD1,500 a month depending on the size, location and type of accommodation.

Cost of Living
Living costs will vary depending on individual lifestyle expectations. A basic student budget is estimated to be HKD40,000 (~USD5,130) a year including meals, transport, laundry, and education expenses for books and stationery. for books and stationery.

For taught postgraduate programmes, applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill one of the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

 A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
Band 6 in the Chinese mainland's College English Test*
