Dr John Chan Bursary Scheme


Regulations

Dr John Chan has agreed to donate a total of HK$100,000 to establish a number of bursaries to the students in the Department of Marketing, City University of Hong Kong with effect from 2013/2014 under the following regulations:

    1. The Awards shall be known as “Dr John Chan Bursary Scheme” ( 陳振東博士助學金 ).
    2. There shall be a maximum of FIVE bursaries per annum. The value of each bursary may range from HK$5,000 to HK$20,000 depending on the financial need of the applicants.
    3. The bursary shall be granted to full-time UGC-funded local undergraduate students who:
      1. are students of the Department of Marketing with major in Marketing or China Business in 2013/2014 academic year; and
      2. came from disadvantaged backgrounds which include:
        1.  suffering from sudden change of family condition, e.g. death of breadwinner(s), unemployment, illness, physical/mental disability, drastic drop of family income; or
        2. single parent or economically inactive family, i.e. the family is receiving Comprehensive Social Security
          Assistance; or
        3. the applicant is suffering from some kind of physical hardship or chronic illness with documentary proof; or
        4. the applicant is the family’s sole breadwinner and is under any undesirable circumstance;
      3. have achieved good academic standing with a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) of 2.0 or above; and
      4. have proven financial need.
    4. The Bursaries will be open for application in September/October each year. Vetting of the applications and allocation of the Bursaries will be made by Student Development Services of the University. The awards shall be granted to the candidates as soon as the nominations are made by the Student Development Services.
    5. An annual report on the Bursaries, summarizing the financial position of the Bursary Fund and the particulars of the recipients will be forwarded to the donor for record by the end of each academic year.

Remark :
With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Club when they are in employment after graduation. This term has been incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.
