Prof. WONG Chak Sham Michael

Prof. Michael C S Wong is  an Associate Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance, and an Affiliate Professor of the Academy of Innovation. His areas of expertise include fintech, sustainable finance, risk management, and financial markets.

Prof. Wong has provided advisory services to various central banks and commercial banks across Asian regions, focusing on risk management and the implementation of Basel Committee rules. He has also prepared independent risk assessment reports for company boards and regulators and has acted as an expert witness in legal disputes involving complex financial transactions. Prof. Wong has served as a founding member of the Global Association of Risk Professionals' FRM Committee, an examiner for professional examinations conducted by the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute and the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers, a member of the Market Misconduct Tribunal in Hong Kong, a judge panel member for CityU's HK Tech 300 in both seed and angel funding rounds, a Senior Scientist at the Laboratory for AI-Powered Financial Technologies, and a visiting scholar in the UK, South Africa, South Korea, and Laos.

Prof. Wong holds postgraduate degrees in Finance and Data Analytics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Essex, and the University of Cambridge. He served for over 12 years as Director of MSc programmes in Finance, Banking, and Financial Engineering at CityU, and for 7 years as Director of the EMBA and Global EMBA programmes. He has supervised more than 17 PhD and DBA graduates and was the founding Residence Master of Alumni Civility Hall, overseeing a community of over 220 undergraduate students. His teaching excellence has been recognized with a university-wide Teaching Excellence Award, and his research has been twice selected as a high-impact case by the university over the past decade.
