Under the digital era, machine learning is widely adopted and optimized among various industries and across job natures. By integrating human and machine intelligence into students’ learning, it can enhance their holistic development, competitive edge, and their ability to apply technical theory on business operations. On 22 July 2023, CityU students joined AWS DeepRacer Training Day to get hands on with machine learning through a cloud-based 3D racing simulator.

The event was kicked off by Mr Alex Lau, Co-Founder of Tecky Academy, with the sharing on trending and future of Artificial Intelligence. Afterwards, Mr Kitson Cheung, AWS Authorized Instructor, delivered an interactive lesson on Reinforcement Learning which is one of the machine learning techniques that takes a very different approach to training models. Its super power is that it learns very complex behaviors without requiring any labeled training data, and can make short term decisions while optimizing for a longer-term goal.

To practice the theory, each group of students were assigned with a DeepRacer vehicle and started building models, training and testing on the track in the AWS DeepRacer 3D racing simulator. The day was concluded in excitement with a racing competition. The champion team was hkg01, winning the race in 00:10.625 seconds!

One of the participating CB students, Stamgul Orunbaeva, BSc Computational Finance and Financial Technology Year 4, said, “Machine learning is playing a crucial role in my career development and employability as a business analyst. The ever-evolving nature of this field requires me to stay updated with the latest algorithms, techniques, and tools. By continuously honing my machine learning expertise, I can enhance my career prospects and make significant contributions to the field of Fintech and data-driven decision-making.”

“Technology is changing rapidly; machine learning is becoming a hot topic in these few years. Many industries have started building and utilizing AI to upgrade and expand their business. Through this workshop, I can learn how to provide more accurate prompts and the process flow of training an AI which will be beneficial for my development and employability,” shared Leung Kwan Nok, BBA Information Systems, Year 1.

AWS DeepRacer is an autonomous race car designed to test Reinforcement Learning models by racing on a physical track. Using cameras to view the track and a reinforcement model to control throttle and steering, the car shows how a model trained in a simulated environment can be transferred to the real-world. Tecky Academy is an official training partner of AWS, dedicated to empowering the next generation of tech professionals with necessary skills. The event was also co-hosted by Amazon Web Service and funded by Career and Leadership Fund.
