A team from the College of Business secured the 10th position with their demonstrated business skills and knowledge in the 2024 Rotman International Trading Competition (RITC) held in late February. The RITC, an annual event hosted by the BMO Finance Research and Trading Lab at the University of Toronto, attracts teams of students from universities across the globe to engage in a unique three-day simulated market challenge. This year, the competition celebrated its 20th anniversary with the participation of 42 teams from 12 different countries, engaging in a variety of activities including electronic trading cases, seminars with industry practitioners, and social events with fellow competitors.

The CB team included Polo Tai Lok-yin (MSc Financial Engineering), Sunny Zhang Yueyang and Charles Wong Ching-nam (both BSc Computational Finance & Financial Technology), Walter Wei Yaotian (BBA Finance) and Silvia Han Yushan (BBA Business Analysis). The team was coached by Professor Jintao Du and coordinated by Mr Cheng Chung-hei, both of the EF department.

Polo Tai shared, “We prepared for a variety of trading cases such as Algo market making, CAPM arbitrage, Option volatility, ETF trading, and more. Coding played a crucial role in these cases. We developed models in VBA and Python, factoring in market considerations like risk management and market conditions. The competition was fierce, but we stood our ground and learned a great deal. Representing CityUHK and travelling abroad to interact with like-minded competitors has been an invaluable experience that has broadened my horizons.”

Sunny Zhang added, “Participating in the competition is an unforgettable experience for me. It enhanced our professional skills, such as trading and market acumen, while providing us with a platform to connect, communicate, and compete with students from all over the world.”

Charles Wong said, “Meeting and learning from competitive teams from other universities was an invaluable experience that will help prepare us for future opportunities.”

Silvia Han said, “The most fascinating part of the competition for me was making decisions while navigating market dynamics and potential shifts in other participants' strategies. It was exciting to quickly recognise and strategically adapt to these changes. It was an incredible game, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Walter Wei also encouraged others to participate, saying, “It is definitely an unforgettable experience! I encourage everyone to try attending these types of events.”

Professor Jintao Du, the team's coach and mentor, shared, “I have been coaching our EF team for six consecutive years, and we have consistently been the top team from the Asia-Pacific region. I am delighted to see our students grow, excel on an international platform, and go on to promising futures after graduation. Many of our past team members have joined top banks and funds as traders, quants, or financial analysts, while others have pursued postgraduate studies at top universities. I am confident that this year’s team members will also find success in the future.”
