CityU Case Competition 2023/24 commences

The CityU Case Competition 2023/24 kicked off with an engaging opening ceremony and a training workshop on 18 March 2024. Organised by the Business Proposal and Competition Club (BPCC) in collaboration with Swire Properties Limited, the event aims to enhance students' competitiveness by providing them with an opportunity to tackle a challenging business case. This year, the theme is real estate value creation through sustainability and wellbeing. Participants are tasked with preparing a proposal to identify the challenges faced by Swire Properties and other real estate companies in Hong Kong and propose solutions to address them.

The CityU Case Competition has expanded its scope with this edition and students from all UGC-funded universities are able to participate. Professor Michael Wong, Associate Dean (Global Executive Programmes), expressed enthusiasm for this development during the opening ceremony, stating, “This year's competition has attracted a total of 67 teams, consisting of 252 students. We are delighted to have 34 students from other local universities such as CUHK, HKBU, HKU, HKUST and LU. This diverse participation promises a vibrant exchange of ideas and perspectives, enriching the overall experience for everyone involved."

Representatives from Swire Properties, including Rossella Chu, Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition; Vicky Au, Talent Acquisition Manager; and David Poraj-Wilczynski, Assistant General Manager of Development & Valuation, introduced Swire Properties and shared background knowledge with the participants for their preparation of the case proposal. Their presence highlights Swire Properties' commitment to fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

Professor Huazhong Zhao, Associate Head of the Department of Marketing, serves as the case advisor for the current competition. His expertise and dedication helped assure the quality and relevance of the cases presented by the competing teams.

The ceremony was attended by over 180 participants, who gained valuable information about the competition and a comprehensive understanding of Swire Properties. Claire Chen, a BBA Business Decision Analytics student, expressed her appreciation, saying, "The opening ceremony of the case competition provided a wealth of information about the competition itself and offered valuable insights into the background of Swire Properties. Learning about Swire Properties' rich history, achievements, and contributions to the industry was both enlightening and inspiring. The detailed introduction helped to establish a solid foundation of knowledge, creating a sense of anticipation and excitement for the upcoming case competition."

David Tse, a BBA Information Management student, described the event as exhilarating, highlighting the presence of industry professionals as judges and the opportunity for students to collaborate across universities. Notably, the competition's focus on sustainability allowed students to explore Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and green-related topics. David emphasised the significance of industry professionals' involvement, stating, "These seasoned experts brought a wealth of experience and knowledge, providing invaluable feedback and insights to the participating students. Such interactions with industry professionals enhance students' understanding of real-world scenarios and better prepare them to navigate the complexities of their future careers."

BPCC, a student-led organisation supported by the College of Business, partners with renowned companies to host business competitions at CityU, with the goal of equipping students with essential skills and fostering their professional growth.
