The opportunity to exchange views on Hong Kong's economic development with a top government official was presented when Mr Paul Chan Mo-po, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong SAR Government, delivered a speech at the EMBA Forum hosted by the College of Business (CB) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 14 July.

This exciting event attracted more than 120 EMBA and DBA students, alumni and faculty, including Professor Freddy Boey Yin Chiang, CityU President, and Professor Kim Jeong-bon, Dean of CB.

Thanking Mr Chan for accepting the invitation to address the forum, President Boey used his welcome speech to acknowledge Mr Chan’s successful leadership in tackling the many significant challenges that Hong Kong had faced recently, including the highly volatile stock and currency markets and the economic impact of the pandemic.

“Today's forum will focus on the overall development, prospects, challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong, which are particularly important in today's rapidly changing business environment, where innovation, connectivity and finance are key driving forces,” Professor Boey said.

CityU will continue to cultivate talent for Hong Kong in collaboration with the government and industry, while CB, as a global, innovative business school, will nurture the next generation of business leaders through a range of business courses, he added.
Mr Chan’s inspiring speech argued that Hong Kong's economy is heading towards normalisation despite external headwinds, and he emphasised that Hong Kong society must infuse its economy with greater dynamism and diversity and should strengthen innovation and technology cooperation with the mainland to fully leverage Hong Kong's competitive advantages.

He also elucidated the government's short-, medium- and long-term measures for promoting Hong Kong's economic development and addressing challenges such as distributing consumption vouchers, attracting talent and business, and developing green finance and innovative technology, among others.

During the constructive Q&A session, he and the attendees exchanged opinions on economic conditions and issues in Hong Kong.
