Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Climate Change Tour - 12 June 2021

The first DABC event of 2021 was a tour visit to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Museum of Climate Change on June 12, 2021. The event was planned as follows:

1. Museum tour
2. Joint discussion event with SDSN Youth - an organization of young students aiming at achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
3. Eco-tour on campus

Due to the typhoon signal, however, the outside eco-tour had to be canceled. The DBAC members who joined were still able to learn about climate change and found a chance to connect and discuss their ideas in the discussion zone. The discussion was mainly about SDGs, sustainability practices in different industries, and people’s approaches to Covid-19 around the world.

For those of you who could not join this event, we have compiled five interesting facts we learned about Climate Change

1. Xuelong (Snow Dragon) is a Chinese icebreaking research vessel that contains a marine lab, sampling rooms, and a helicopter. China’s research expedition in the Arctic Ocean aims at discovering how seawater and marine beings are affected by climate change.
2. Sea ice melting is more than rising sea levels. For example, the birth rate of seals is decreasing because they cannot find ice to give birth on.
3. Due to more extended warm periods, arctic mosquitos have been more pervasive. They are disturbing reindeers resulting in them running away.
4. Climate change has an enormous impact on the culture of Eskimos. They have been eating raw seal meat and housing in igloos made of ice blocks. As the seal population is decreasing and igloos are melting, Eskimos’ way of living is no longer possible.
5. Greenhouse gases are necessary for the existence of life on earth. Without the resulting greenhouse gas effect, the average earth temperature would be a freezing -18 °C. But since industrialization, humanity has been producing more and more greenhouse gasses causing undesired impacts.
