Be Proactive about Participating in Open Competitions

The HKICS Corporate Governance Paper Competition is an inspiring competition that offered a new experience in our final year at university. We won the Merit Prize for Paper Award and the 1st runner-up for Best Presentation Award.

During the competition preparation, we faced numerous challenges and constraints, such as tight deadlines and conflicting engagements among groupmates. Fortunately, we managed to succeed with teammates’ diverse experience, innovation, the organization of human talents and effective leadership.

When entering the finals in the competition, we rapidly developed a winning presentation style, studied the requirements and focused on the essentials. We worked excellently as a team by recognizing and dealing with each other’s concerns, and keeping other teammates updated of the progress in our assigned tasks. This prevented unnecessary deviation from the agreed upon plan and ensured that we were precisely on track. We also learned how to divide the tasks so that each team member focused on the task that he or she was good at. Once we came up with a bright idea, we did intense brainstorming and critical evaluation of the issues and flexibly reorganized team responsibilities, allowing us to move forward smoothly towards our goal.

Since we realized our lack of public speaking experience, we had to run numerous rehearsals before the competition under the supervision of our professors. Later, we became more familiar with the competition mode and this boosted our confidence.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our Department for the support it has given us. In the Competition, an AC professor helped us fine-tune our final delivery. Last, we want to encourage other students to proactively seek out public competitions — it is a platform guaranteed to broaden both your hard and soft skills.

Necessary Skills in Preparing for the Competition

I joined the competition to increase my knowledge about corporate governance (CG) and bolster my research, analytical and presentation skills. Many steps had to be taken to prepare for the competition. First, I referred to past CG papers from the competition to analyze their structures and sources of ideas. We drew brief outlines after some general research.

After setting deadlines and word limits for each part of our analysis, we conducted in-depth research by asking ourselves “what”, “how” and “why” to evaluate the persuasiveness of our arguments. Finally, we had to proofread and modify the analysis in accordance with the rules set by the HKICS.

The competition stimulated our ideas in writing the CG papers, and we benefited a great deal from it. For instance, we sharpened our research skills by accessing numerous journals, websites and books and then quickly filtering out the useless information and spotlighting the crucial information. We also improved our paper-writing skills in terms of conciseness, cohesiveness and organization. We also enhanced our presentation skills by observing different teams’ performances, slogans, and team sprits. We understood the importance of being natural and well-prepared for the presentation and Q&A sessions and of the smooth, cohesive delivery of the ideas during the presentation session.
