Course Registration

During the first year of your study, we will pre-register all required core courses for you, i.e., you do not have to register for the required core courses yourself.

In general, if you are:

  1. local students, we will pre-register the required core courses for you based on the premise that you will study in part-time mode unless you inform us otherwise.

  2. non-local students, we will pre-register the required core courses for you based on the study mode (part-time or full-time) that you have indicated on your admission application.

  3. Part-time Mode

For students studying in part-time mode, the normal study load per semester in the first year of study is 2 courses and EF5063 “Professional Seminars” (a year-long course that students will take in the first year).

For students studying in full-time mode, the normal study load per semester in the first year of study is 4 or 5 courses and EF5063 “Professional Seminars” (a year-long course that students will take in the first year).

Hence, the following required core courses will be pre-registered for you:

    Important Notes

The pre-registration of required core courses is made for you in accordance with your mode of study indicated to the University. In case that you may not follow a normal study pattern to take the required core courses as listed, you should notify the Postgraduate Unit of the Department of Economics and Finance accordingly.

Furthermore, for any registration of elective courses or to change the courses (or sections) that we have pre-registered for you, you should follow the course add/drop procedure described in “Course Add/Drop”.

Subject to the approval of the Department of Economics and Finance and the offering departments, students may also choose the postgraduate courses other than the consortium courses offered in the College of Business or even other Colleges/Schools. For example, MSFE students who are interested in taking more quantitative courses may consider courses offered by the Department of Mathematics.

For courses offered by all the departments in the University, please visit
https://www.cityu.edu.hk/pg/current/catalogue/catalogue_TP.htm?page=TP/TP_course_index.htm.

7There are other postgraduate courses offered by the Department exclusively for MSc Applied Economics students. The list of these courses is available at https://www.cityu.edu.hk/pg/current/catalogue/catalogue_TP.htm?page=TP/TP_course_EF.htm.

8MSFE students can take these courses as their electives. In particular, MSFE students who do not have much statistics background are strongly encouraged to take EF5070 Econometrics as one of their electives.

9MSF and MSFE students can take these courses as their electives.

10Offering of this course is subject to change. AC5803 is offered by the Department of Accountancy, but it is opened exclusively for MSF/MSFE/MSFS students.

11These are consortium courses open to all postgraduate students within the College of Business.
