Preparatory Math Workshop Series in the summer
The Preparatory Math Workshop Series is designed for MSF, MSFE and MSFS students. The objective of the workshop series is to help students review some of the mathematical concepts and tools that will be used in the programmes. No extra fee or tuition is required for these workshops.
The workshop series will start from 8 - 27 August, 2015. Please click HERE for the course outline (including schedule, venue, etc.) and handouts. For non-local students who cannot arrive in Hong Kong on time for the workshop series, they can study the handouts before they come to Hong Kong.
Attendance is optional. However, we do strongly encourage students to attend the workshops for two reasons:
-
To review concepts: The workshop series will help students review some of the mathematical concepts and tools that they will encounter in the programmes – this is especially important for students who are lack of strong mathematical background or who have not used the mathematical tools for a long time. In particular, the workshop series is specifically designed to help students prepare for EF5070 “Econometrics” (MSF required core course), MA5182 “Mathematical Methods in Finance” (MSFE required core course), and EF5370 “Mathematics and Statistics for Financial Services” (MSFS required core course) that many students find difficult.
-
To earn PDUs for EF5063 Professional Seminars: We consider the Preparatory Math workshops as part of EF5063 and students can earn PDUs (Professional Development Units) towards satisfying the attendance requirement of EF5063. For details of PDUs earned in the workshop series, please refer to the course outline which will be sent to students by the end of June via email.
(In the past, some students have difficulty satisfying the attendance requirement of EF5063 due to heavy workload or unexpected business trips. Hence, it would be advantageous for students to earn as many PDUs as possible during the summer and at the beginning of the academic year.)
Bloomberg (self-learning resources)
Besides the trainings hosted by Bloomberg, it is worthwhile for students to learn Bloomberg through the following self-learning resources:
1) Bloomberg Terminal
One Bloomberg terminal is supplied at the Department of Economics and Finance (EF) for students’ learning and using. The terminal is located at the i-Corner of EF (P7402, 7/F, Purple Zone, Academic 1 / opening hours: Mon – Sun, 9:00 am – 11:00 pm). Students are welcome to have a go and access the Bloomberg terminal during the opening hours. Normally, no reservation is required to use the terminal.
2) Bloomberg University (BU) which is a learning resource installed in the Bloomberg terminal. It is a good tool for students who wish to learn or refresh the core functionality of Bloomberg. In the BU, you can view training videos, search for upcoming Bloomberg seminars and events, take examinations and request for a certificate of “Acknowledgment of Completion” (if you achieve a score of 75% correct or higher). Besides, the <HELP> feature is also available in the Bloomberg terminal. It works like a search engine. You can simply type a keyword and press <HELP> (e.g. CREDIT RATING <HELP>). It provides definitions, FAQ and direct access to Bloomberg functions.

(2) A guide for getting started with Bloomberg
For your reference, you may also access some of those Bloomberg training videos uploaded by individual users via Internet search engines. You may consider this resource as an efficient learning tool.
3) Bloomberg Aptitude Test (BAT) which is a global standardized online exam that assesses your abilities as a critical thinker across a variety of competencies. The BAT can help students and recent graduates connect with financial employers worldwide. Students who take the BAT uncover their strengths across a range of finance, business, career and personal competencies and gain insight into their suitability for careers in business and finance. If you are interested in BAT, please visit this link: http://about.bloomberginstitute.com/students/bloomberg-aptitude-test/ for registration and more details.
4) Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) which is an 8 hour self-paced e-learning course that provides a visual introduction to the financial markets. It is available at the Bloomberg Institute website for a student rate. If you are interested in BMC, please visit this link: http://about.bloomberginstitute.com/students/bloomberg-market-concepts/ for more information.
