"Having considered both a PhD and a DBA, I find the DBA programme to be more appropriate and relevant for a senior executive. It provides a clear structure and guidance in the intended research with personal support to facilitate the research process.
The CityU DBA programme gives me the opportunity to study topics related to my work in advising our clients on R&D globalisation strategies. It will allow me to gain a better understanding of the factors that impact future R&D extensions and effectiveness. "After many decades in watch industry, the DBA programme of City University of Hong Kong has equipped me with the modern knowledge to explore the traditional watch industry from another perspective. I have to thank all the professors for their dynamic knowledge which is very important in leading me to the right direction on the research road. The College of Business, being one of the top business schools in the world, has provided excellent design of the programme for the executives and top management. Here, I meet learning partners from various professions and I am glad to have lots of supports and sharing throughout the study and research journey. I must say I am proud to be part of the CityU DBA family!"

It seems like just yesterday that I started my DBA studies. I can still remember the day that I first met the Professors, Learning Partners and the DBA team members in my cohort. Thanks for their help and the greatest support from CityU. I managed to get my Doctorate degree with an enlarged vision and a feast of knowledge. Having joined and completed the DBA Programme is one of the best decisions in my life. The journey is tough but fruitful. It makes me know my limits and the studies would not be complete without the help and understandings of my Supervisor, Professors, Learning Partners and many others.

"The DBA journey is one that I will always treasure because it transformed me - I continue to reap the benefits, both personally and professionally. Spiral learning, in the DBA context, is an excellent methodology that introduces the basic principles of research and then gives students the knowledge and skills needed to dig into topics with greater depth of understanding. These tools allowed me to apply what I had learned with confidence and authority. I encourage anyone who has a passion for learning to investigate City U’s DBA program. Many thanks to Professor Ozer for opening the door to a brighter future, to Professor Raymond Wong for his guidance and encouragement, and to the 2019 Cohort for their support and friendship. I would do it all over again!"

I still remember the very first contact, when I, being on a business trip to Hong Kong, had nothing better to do than checking out universities and business schools for what they had to offer in terms of EMBA or doctorate studies. It was Pat Wong who started a fire in me, which didn’t extinct for the next six years. I met unbelievably nice and helpful learning partners and paid back as being the Chairman of the DBAC for a while. I had ups and downs but one thing I never had – regret. I enjoyed Prof Kumar at the introduction, I was impressed of Prof Ozer who took the program to the next level and of course I admired my mentor, Prof Zhao, who has been outstanding! It is a kind of magical destiny that it was Pat Wong who I bumped into last before I left the university building after I successfully defended my work – Pat, my personal Alpha and Omega.

“My 5-year DBA journey at CityU provides the best complement to my career pursuit as a full-fledged and professional marketing practitioner. The global pandemic situation means that marketers today have an even tougher job helping their companies and business management to promote the advocated products and solutions, given that social distancing regulations push aside traditional face-to-face marketing activities. The topic of my research on how high-tech companies can strategically design and manipulate advertising message in electronic based media thus becomes indubitably relevant, both from a personal front as well as from an academic and business managerial perspective. The CityU DBA program further enhances my professional marketing training by offering a practical learning framework in terms of instilling critical thinking process and systematic analytic approach to better appreciating as well as further elevating the role of marketing in contributing to any company’s bottom line."

“The DBA learning journey is indeed a very rewarding experience, testing one's perseverance in search of the research question, and to establish the significance of the contributions. The emphasis on quality and academic rigor has been a very important guiding principle throughout the many reviews of the research proposal, leading to the completion of the research, and the final completion of the thesis. The insight and the challenge to get to the real issues enlightened me to strengthen the research model and the methodology to ensure the conclusions are sound and adhere to a high academic standard. Having left the academic field for so many years, and so used to driving projects to finish at preset deadlines, I felt the DBA journey in search of knowledge is most refreshing and is a big part of what I have benefited after completion of the programme."

"Undertaking this DBA has been a life changing experience for me and it would not have been possible without the support and guidance that I received from many people. I would like to say a very big thank you to my supervisor Dr. Michael C. S. Wong and Professor Muammer Ozer for their unfailing support of my DBA study. Their guidance had helped me enormously in all of the time of research and writing of this thesis. My deep appreciation also goes out to the interviewees and all the survey participants for their time and contribution towards my DBA research."

"Although I consider four years to be a long time, my journey in the CityU DBA program was made steady by the constant support from my supervisor, the program office and my learning partners. The spiral learning process works! I conducted my research during a very busy, and largely positive, period of my professional and personal life that witnessed the completion of numerous projects and initiatives as well as the commencement of several more. I am very happy that it all came together so well!
My advice to future DBA cohorts is to start with a field where one has experience, insight and the ability to collect data. Within that, focus on problems that are bothering you and others. Then, sample a range of literature on these problems in order to choose a specific problem to dive deeper into; use concept maps to simplify."

“ 'Finally, I got my DBA degree.' I think most of our DBA graduates had this dream when we all started. Some really did it but some are still working on it. Having a goal on why you want it and hanging with it till the end are very important. I had a clear goal of getting my DBA degree when I started. The qualification and knowledge from DBA would add a lot of values to the new direction of my career on consulting and executive education. During the journey of our DBA study, every one of us has gone through different types of challenges from personal life, career and even health. We all managed these hurdles and made it through. Just me was not good enough to finish this long journey of DBA. The concept of “Learning Partner” is fantastic and critical to our success because the sustainable encouragement and support from your cohorts are very important to bring you back to the journey when you are thinking to give up. Trust me. You will have moments to think about quitting this journey and our LPs will be there to help. Hang in there, learning partners."

"I established my company more than 26 years ago. Out of curiosity, I enrolled in CityU's EMBA programme in 2004. I found that the course content was very practical in the sense that I could directly apply what I learned to improve corporate management and crisis control. After graduation from the EMBA programme, I immediately enrolled in CityU's DBA programme to further my knowledge base. The programme helped to train me to think, act and lead within a global framework. I am now able to investigate and analyse my business issues from different perspectives."

"In my first meeting with the DBA faculty and my fellow learning partners of CityU, I shared my experiences as an investment banker in the aftermath of the financial tsunami. As a practitioner in the financial market, I have learned that the more I know, the more I realise how much I do not know. The CityU DBA programme helps me fill this gap. The academic methodology stimulates my mind and enables me to approach situations logically and systematically. Although I already have two Master's degrees, including one from Columbia University, I have found that the faculty, fellow students and resources at CityU have added to my prior education experience. It has been well worth the effort to commute from Singapore to Hong Kong for this programme. Furthermore, the CityU DBA program has helped me to invigorate my thinking process, expand my study interest, and attain my goal to change my career from investment banking to international higher education in Singapore and United States."

Completing a doctoral degree is challenging, yet it is an exceptional and inspiring experience. I have always wanted to pursue a higher degree to broaden my views and deepen my knowledge. Recommended by a number of EMBA professors in CityU, CityU’s DBA programme is definitely a right choice.
As a senior executive of a Supply Chain Management company, I find that CityU’s DBA course offers a comprehensive and well-structured curriculum that allows me to integrate my work experience and DBA’s rigorous research approach in solving business problems. The DBA programme enhances and strengthens my knowledge and passion in the field of Supply Chain Risk Management. The practicability of the course, especially the focus on research methodology allows me to apply knowledge and theory in practice.
Apart from lectures, the DBA programme has also given me an invaluable opportunity to share experience with my fellow classmates and build lasting relationships. The DBA learning journey is rewarding and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this course to other senior executives that are considering pursuing further studies.

"The decision to pursue the DBA program has been by far the most awakening experience both personally and professionally and I am grateful for having been part of this learning journey. The program was rigorous and while there were certainly low moments which questioned why I had embarked on this initiative, the support that I received from the DBA community was second to none. Throughout the four years, resources were always available from the support staff at the DBA office, our learning partners (across cohorts) and also my mentors. This was a great opportunity to learn in an ecosystem that provides rich research resources, healthy debate and an environment that was very supportive. I highly recommend anyone to this world class program who has the curiosity to learn and address research questions in pursuit of good quality answers."

"Learning how to learn is essential. It facilitates a continuous and lifelong study path for pursue of knowledge. By way of this important process, I have succeeded in completing three postgraduate qualifications in the last 10 years or so, including the City University of Hong Kong DBA programme.
I have chosen to participate in the CityU DBA programme because I can focus on a specific subject that I intend to dedicate my time and effort to, for both personal interests as well as to relate it to my work. The period of last 4 years has proven to be a valuable one as I was able to share views with other professionals on both common subjects as well as distinct areas that we are specialized in. On top of that, I also hope my search topic is able to serve as a useful reference for those who work in the financial industry."

My DBA was a truly transformative journey and an intellectually inspiring experience. I learned about the importance to frame the right question and simplify complex issues so that they can be methodically addressed. The course is rigorous, challenging and it requires a strong discipline to present a cohesive and meaningful thesis. At the same time, I developed a deep passion for the subject of my research and, even today, I keep studying to improve my model. The sense of achievement - and the effort to finish the course - is monumental and I was lucky I could count on the very firm support of my wife, my daughter and my research supervisor.

To accomplish the doctoral study with my classmates is an awarding experience in my career and personal life. We were rigorously trained with the basic business research methodologies as well as interdisciplinary thinking, which will benefit us for the rest of our life. Building on my practical experience in the banking industry and the research skills acquired from CityU, I am able to look at some economic phenomena with new perspective. Prior to joining the DBA programme, I have always been interested in the arbitrage problem brought by “One currency, Two prices, and Two markets” of Renminbi. Through the doctoral study, I am able to answer part of the problem with my own empirical research. Besides, my study at CityU was made enjoyable in large part due to the friends, professors and importantly, my mentor, that becoming a part of my life. I cannot image how hard it will be without the help and guidance from them.

"It is an interesting and challenging learning journey. In fact, many requirements in running a doctorate research are different from my previous experience and judgment. Sometimes, these differences lead to frustration and many times, make me feel difficult to motivate myself to do the work. It is very important to communicate with my supervisor and learn from him. Getting a clear guideline from my supervisor, I can make fruitful progress, and more importantly, I can re-pick my passion on doing this tough work. "

"When I was looking around for different academic programs to strengthen my professional knowledge, I felt that with my two Master’s degrees, one in marketing and one in communications, I did not need another taught course, such as an MBA or EMBA, but a research course that would help me to come up with some fresh ideas and solutions for my real life problem in business; a research course that could allow me to study on a part-time basis. Finally, I chose Doctor of Business Administration programme of the City University of Hong Kong which allowed me to create new knowledge in line with the subject of my research enquiry and ‘drills down more in-depth’ to the causes of the problem.
Going through the academic journey, I am not alone. I appreciate the different perspectives my learning partners and lecturers have brought to the table and given me a chance to explore from the angles of practitioner and academics. Actually, the problems we are facing are very similar. Now, we do share common ‘business language’ and eventually –‘academic language’ although we are from different industries. "

For the first year, I flied to Hong Kong for the weekend course almost once a month. After I returned to China, it was also challenging to manage the balance among professional responsibility, academic research and family need. Reflecting on my research journey in the past 4 years, I regard it as the most rewarding and unforgettable part in my life as it has brought me not only the knowledge and methodology but also the courage and tenacity."

Although it is not easy to reach a balance among family, work and study, I gained strong support from my Learning Partners (LPs), my thesis supervisor and the DBA office. It was an amazing group of senior executives, as the LPs came from different industries and markets with track records in their career. We shared our best practices as well as experiences and also supported to each other during our research journey. We learnt the latest development in business research from the scholars of College of Business, one of the leading business schools in Asia, and we were encouraged to advance the frontiers of knowledge. My interest on the examined topic began in my EMBA at CityU in 2012, where I was leading a sales team and in a business development role in a local listed luxury watch and jewelry conglomerate. There was always a task for me on how to read customers’ perception on luxury and high price goods; what do customers expect from you and what are the key factors on customer brand loyalty. I was inspired and encouraged by the faculty members, Dr K.K. Lai and Dr John Leung, to pursue the DBA programme to further explore the topic; and I was very lucky to be able to have both of them as my mentor and supervisor. This challenging project would not be complete without their constant academic support and guidance through the time. The journey is tough, and yet it is meaningful.

"Finishing the DBA study has been one of the most challenging milestones in my life. Before DBA, I was trained and used to be a problem solver in both my study and work. Until taking the DBA program, I have not realized that problem identification was actually far more important and difficult than problem solving. Incapable of identifying the problems, you will never be able to solve the true problems. I am also enlightened by CityU DBA’s spiraling training methodology with both problem identification and problem solving entailing continuous challenges and refinements before you could arrive at your answer."

"This study was an extraordinary journey in my personal and professional life over the past years, during which I went through several career changes and family events. In addition to a heavy day job, I have taken part in many professional activities and taken up many public service duties. Time management has been one of the biggest challenges, while another being the highly technical and fast-evolving realm of AI and Machine Learning itself. At times I felt inept at the task and frustrated by the lack of progress, finding myself alone in search of an exit. What kept me going was firstly my vehement desire to learn, and gratefully my supervisor and those at home and in the office, on campus and in the community, who had warmly accompanied and encouraged me to complete this journey. Looking back, as Nelson Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done."

When I took the EMBA course at CityU in 2005, I asked Dr John Leung one question, “how to get the A grade?” He answered, “Once you understand, the highest possible grade is C+, that is the definition level; once you apply, the lowest possible grade is B-, that is the application level.” So who will get the A grade? It is the one who innovates, or integrates different knowledge and goes his own way. That is the reason why I took the DBA course in 2012 in order to experience the last part of the question. Six years after the decision, I find that there are many chances when I did my research and extended my network.

"I believe that every person has more or less the same innate potential. What differentiates a meaningful life is the personal attitudes and values that we each carry. And despite what much of society impels us to believe, our life accomplishments are not judged by wealth or social status. People with seemingly little or no material assets can nonetheless live a free and wonderful life. In such a world, I think curiosity, kindness, and perseverance are of outsized importance. My pursuit of lifelong learning grew from these values. After completing my master degree at the City University of Hong Kong, I continued to pursue my doctoral degree in an endeavor to push my academic curiosities to new and challenging places.
Thank you for the support of City University of Hong Kong, my professors, my colleagues, my industry leaders and my family members for allowing me to successfully complete my Thesis and witness another milestone in my life."

"My job requires in-depth analysis on financial economics, the CityU DBA program has strengthened my research capability and brought my expertise up to the next level. As a certified public accountant and a chartered financial analyst, I tended to look at business issues in quite a broad way. However, the DBA program taught me how to utilize my various skills and focus them in a more structured and analytical way, which enables me to make better business decisions. The DBA program is well-organized and provides excellent support for participants to conduct rigorous research, my DBA journey is truly rewarding."

"I embarked on my DBA journey because of the aspiration of creating my own knowledge to contribute to the community. CityU DBA program is a wonderful platform where I can ask why and discover insights by applying research methodologies. I enjoyed the literature review as I could find so much existing work to build on with my practical experience. The research and analysis work were challenging, yet the excitement of discovering new insights was indescribable. In fact, my DBA journey was not a flat one. It could be accomplished thanks to the unfailing support and guidance from my supervisor, the program director, learning partners and my family. The friendship and support I won were most treasurable. Besides, I gained useful lifelong skills of prioritization, perseverance, time and stress management. I can proudly conclude that the accomplishment exceeds my expectation."

It is always a great concern for people who wish to pursue a doctorate degree is the writing of a thesis and so do I. However, there is a way to easy your learning journey. It is very imperative if you are able to fix the topic for your thesis even before the start of school, then you probably would have an enjoyable voyage. I picked up my topic before the admission interview and gradually formulated the title couple of months after the course started. Once you fixed the title, you will find each assignment is interesting simply because you are creating the building blocks of your final paper. Those building blocks have been verified by various professors with their comments so they are quality and valuable which is adaptable to your final paper. Last not least, do treat seriously every single assignment and ensure you digested the comments well.

"It is a great honor to have been a learning partner of the renowned CityU DBA program. My original goals in deciding to participate in the DBA program were (a) to develop a sense of disruptive thinking with broader perspectives, (b) to stretch my cognitive and analytical skills for problem solving, and (c) to generate new knowledge that might be relevant and useful to other supply chain practitioners. After having pursued these goals in the past few years, I would say what I gained on this learning journey was far beyond what I had expected. Balancing demands between a full-time profession and the DBA study, the learning journey was not as smooth as one might think. However, with the unwavering confidence shown in me and helpful guidance given me by my supervisor and mentor, Professor Ozer, and the professional supports by the DBA administrative staff, I was able to complete my research thesis. Thank you for this priceless learning experience. I would highly recommend CityU DBA program to anyone who may be interested."

"There comes a stage in your career where you have achieved a lot but something still feels missing. For me, enrolling into the DBA program at CityU was the answer to my mid-life crisis. I was looking to develop a deeper understanding of my professional world “standing” on the shoulders of all the prior academic work and hopefully make some incremental contribution to both. Any concerns I had about whether the program was going to be pragmatic enough for experienced working professionals were allayed very early into the program. The “spiral” learning approach ensures that all the time spent by learning partners contributes incrementally to the end goal of producing a thesis document. Two residential workshops, one at the beginning of the program and one at the end of the 2 years, are well timed to provide a broad initial framework (first workshop) and a pit-stop (second workshop) to take stock of the progress. More importantly, the DBA program focuses on creating a support network for a journey that can sometimes be lonely and frustrating. My journey was not without its ups and downs, but the team at CityU, whether it was my mentor, the program director or the support staff, were always available to help out and recognized my needs as a working professional were different from full time university students. As I look back on my journey, not only did I achieve my objective of answering some interesting questions relating to my profession but also managed to co-author a research paper based on my thesis. Apart from the sense of personal achievement, the DBA experience now allows me to bring my unique perspective to solve real world problems at my workplace, leveraging my academic and professional experience."

In this period, the roles of my program leaders and my supervisor were indispensable, as I seek to enter, walk through, and finish the course of research.
Encouragement and supportive suggestions from family members and close friends had definite influence to my persisting will. Also, the learning partnership of cohorts helped me to carry on and continue to the end. I am grateful to them all."

"The DBA research coursework started at teaching how to look for evidence of all claims before drawing conclusions. As the study moved on, I realized explicit findings were neither the mere answer nor the conclusion. The ultimate skill I acquired was to know how to apply the evidence to imply the conclusion. Ever since, I am inspired to look for better solution before making business decisions at work. Combining evidence and work experience, I carefully draw conclusions.
General speaking, I have less doubt on the description that female are more emotional than male; it was proven true in my family. But now, the concept can be re-written. I gained from learning to think critically before giving my views during family discussions or arguing on issues and at time to defense my beliefs, I actually gave up the sense of ownership on opinions. I am totally amazed with the improvement.
There are endless benefits for aiming at lifelong learning, joining DBA program is a good step for eligible, an immediate reward is to bear the undoubting recognized title as “Dr” after graduate. Not the least, I highly recommend the practical DBA program run by the College of Business at City University of Hong Kong. It has enriched my life with experiences on the development of skill and creating new knowledge. The thesis/dissertation trains scholars; it is a certificate for admission into the profession (Lovitts and Wert 2009)."

"The four-year DBA course has been invaluable that it has trained me the rigor and discipline of proper research and attribution. For the last 25 years, I have written my opinions and sharing of my thoughts in thousands of blogs, speeches, newspaper articles, and social media. Many are based on various readings and informal research. The course, through its lectures have highlighted for me proper channels of research, evaluation of factual information and reaching of conclusions. Through its various activities, like the CEO forum, as well as the listening of other people’s works, and comments, it had also stressed the various points of views or ‘versions of truths’. I believe after such exercise, it has instilled me a better appreciation of deductive thinking, and I believe I am less prone to believing in fake news and facts after the experience."

"I appreciate the program structure especially the core modules and electives leading to finalization of research proposal by the end of second year. Keeping the momentum to continue research work after the 2nd year is the toughest as from 3rd year onwards learning partners are not required to attend monthly lectures and submit coursework except annual progress report. Therefore, future learning partners should leverage the alumni and learning partner network, plan meetings and/or conference calls with supervisors regularly and stay on track (not distracted by work or business commitments) to prepare for research proposal defense, collect and analyze data by 3rd year in order to complete writing up the thesis and pass oral examination to graduate by the 4th year. “Initially the thought of going back to school after 35 years seemed like a crazy one, and taking on the challenge to get a doctorate degree was definitely one of the biggest decisions and challenges for me personally and professionally. However, I felt strongly that I had a mission upon me to contribute a research topic that is dear to my heart prior to my retirement. I chose a topic that was time relevant and impactful, but little that I knew that embarking a academic research was way more laborious and complicated than rendering pragmatic advice to a Fortune 500 client. I was fortunate to have many people such as my supervisor Professor Phyllis Mo and many CityU faculties, Learning Partners and Deloitte colleagues who were extremely generous with their time and offered me valuable counsel. Their support kept me going and has made my 6-year DBA journey at City University of Hong Kong enormously meaningful and memorable. ”

“Embarking on my DBA journey felt like stepping into a labyrinth of knowledge. Initially laden with uncertainty while defining the path and immersing myself in a sea of literature, then transformative as I started to uncover the unique twists and turns of my research. Finally, the opportunity to publish and share my findings with the world made me both proud and humble. Proud to contribute to the vast world of knowledge within academia, and humble in recognition of its immensity.
Throughout this rigorous intellectual journey, I received invaluable support from fellow researchers. They taught me the purpose of academic research and encouraged my endeavors. This tremendous support continues to motivate me as I embark on research projects post-completion. This journey was not only an academic experience but also a deeply human one, and I am profoundly thankful to the CityU DBA team, who consistently provided support and guidance.”

"People say, 'You can be at the top if you work with the top.' I would modify this slightly. 'You will be at the top if you work with the top who want to be topper.'
Our DBA programme provides you with this chance. Every learning partner is passionate about further sharpening themselves even though all of them have been very successful in their professions for years.
To maximise the benefit of learning, you cannot just work on your own. The CityU DBA programme offered me an excellent platform to exchange ideas with experienced learning partners from different backgrounds. I very much appreciated listening to others' views and about why they valued their perspectives, which were different from mine. The learning environment stimulated and inspired me to think further. New knowledge was created in this situation by benchmarking, mutual questioning and self-reflection. That was what I wanted, so I could raise the bar for myself.

“My research of valuation approaches for new economy companies started with an investment strategy I proposed when I joined the Edmond De Rothschild Group in 2005 and discussed with Chief Economist then about China investment opportuni5es. I recommended investment in technology companies as a decade-long growth opportunity to invest in China-related assets. In 2018, I asked Professor Wang Junbo during DBA interview in CityU about this perception of technology growth companies as a source of long-term value investing. He encouraged me to explore deeper into this alternative investment topic. I then focused the first assignment of my paper on the idea of a new concept of alterna5ve investment. Thanks to Professor Ozer’s summarized research methods named as acronym as his name, I refocus and improved my thesis design, zooming in on the understanding and social aspects of valua5on approaches, that is, thinking about externalities of intangible assets. Step by step, my thesis titled "Tobin's Q Dilemma: A new concept O for new economy companies valuation VS Tobin's Q." came into being. During this process, Professor Wang’s questions have provoked me to think more thoroughly, whilst Dr Sidney Leung encouraged me to have in-deep analysis of the winner-take-all phenomenon in the new economy. Professor Xueping Wu of Corporate Finance suggested me earnestly to consider literature retrieval from the marginal thinking of marginal cost perspective.
In short, four years of study and research have allowed me to dig deeper and deeper on this unique topic. By combining investment practice, I break the traditional model to validate this new concept from the perspective of intangible assets and capital market pricing framework. ”

When I was seven years old, I dreamed of becoming a lawyer. With all the hard work and persistence, I admitted into the law school and have been in the legal industry for over 18 years. Searching for my next life challenge and dreamed of obtaining a doctorate degree, I decided to undertake the DBA Programme back in 2019, a journey that was completely foreign to me at the outset but somewhat fascinating me throughout.
Time flies, three years passed by quickly. The DBA Programme has truly enriched my experience in acquiring the essential knowledge of research methodologies through the well-constructed, practical and progressive core courses; applying the knowledge in my interested research topic; seeking guidance from the world-renowned professors; sharing my research ideas and framework with fellow learning partners, DBA graduates and professors via different workshops and forums and acquiring constructive feedback. Now I would say - it is true. Quite puzzled when we were choosing or changing the topic of thesis. Quite frustrated when we were not able to concentrate on the study because of the pressure from the job. Yet, we never give up. After talking with other learning partners and our mentors, we always find the achievement and celebrate it even with a little progression. Finally, we make it."

I am glad to have selected the CityU DBA programme, having the option to evaluate between two offers. CityU DBA programme allowed professionals like myself to be able to apply our work experience and knowledge into practical academic research. I took a bold step to study a topic in socially responsible investing. A DBA research is a big commitment both in time and financial resources. The decision was taken after several years of careful consideration on how to document my experience gained during my working life. It is fortunate that we have some top universities in Hong Kong including the City University of Hong Kong. The DBA program is a true world class program. The rigorous approach and systematic research methodology laid a solid foundation for me to complete my research. This research experience also provided a good framework for solving business problems in the future. The support and guidance by the professors are fantastic. When the academic world fused with the industries, the amazing synergy produced valuable and practical research. I truly enjoyed and treasured my DBA journey whole-heartedly. It is undoubtedly another important step in my lifelong learning journey.

My learning journey has been a very pleasant one. The spiral learning methodology adopted by CityU DBA in teaching research methodology built a good foundation for my research skill. I have the pleasure to be guided by experienced scholars on both the research side and the subject domain. I have stopped my business travels during 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. This allows me to devote more time to my research and makes it possible for me to complete the whole program including the dissertation in 3 years. I am very excited about the findings of my research because Blockchain is new and there are few studies on a similar topic before. Meanwhile, I’m sharing my findings to different communities and hope my work would contribute to the research of Blockchain.

"Do you still remember your childhood dream? You may have forgotten it or feel that it cannot be achieved. My advice is ‘Don’t forget! You can make it!’
‘Doctor’ was my nickname given by my secondary school classmates and teachers. The reason was I was very curious about things more than the typical students in my school. “Got a doctor degree” was one of my childhood dreams. However, as a busy executive, the goal seems impossible. With determination, I accomplish the mission impossible: DBA.
After finishing the DBA journey, I could tell you it was not just a dream come true but an invaluable chance to further develop myself in different areas, fulfill my curiosity and enrich my life experience. The learning partners become definitely life long friends and supporters. DBA thesis provides a platform for me to develop a new risk assessment model which contributes to the academic and professional communities. It is amazing from my point of view and is a big achievement in my life. I must say – I can make it, you can make it too."

“Preparing and writing my dissertation for DBA was a valuable learning process with a fruitful reward that I would not exchange for anything else. All parts of the thesis were put under close verification on whether they meet DBA’s rigorous academic requirements. The persistent efforts put into the thesis throughout this process not only helped me discover the answers to my research questions, which were directly related to my own business but also allowed me to make academic and practical contributions to related industries. I was constantly stimulated and motivated by my professors and learning partners at DBA, who have now become my most valuable assets. I could not have completed my dissertation without their help. I was able to accumulate new academic knowledge related to my work in the process of writing my thesis. In addition to enhancing my intellectual capacity, simultaneously managing work and research for several years increased my capacity for handling various tasks involving different competencies. I feel as though DBA has trained me to push myself beyond my limits to reach a new level. At the end of this journey, I find myself even more invigorated to pursue further research. Lastly, I am immensely grateful and happy that I was able to learn and accomplish something new at my not-so-young age. I sincerely thank my supervisor and advisors, learning partners, and the staff at the DBA office.”

“In my 7-year-long DBA journey, juggling time management to balance my study and business commitments requires sacrificing my leisure time with family and friends. In writing my thesis, the mental training for preserving my rigorousness in refining the data construction enhances my persistence and humility. “Theory upon theory, here a little and there a little“ is the learning pattern I practiced when I followed the inspiring and encouraging guidance of my supervisor, Dr. Sidney Leung. The profound academic research I experienced reinforces my knowledge and intelligence in diagnosing a firm’s financial health and corporate governance, which safeguards my decision to select a viable investment opportunity from a more scientific approach. Finally, I would also like to give credit to the unforgotten teaching motto, “ So What?” by Professor Muammer Ozer, which stimulates my thinking to open up all possibilities in solving problems in my further academic study. ”

"To obtain a doctorate was my teenage dream. However, this dream was lost when I grew up with other priorities in my life. Until one day, over 25 years passed in my professional career with many challenges overcome, lessons learned, but still questions remained, I came across this CityU DBA program aiming to offer systematic research methodology to create new knowledge and answer business questions by myself. It rekindled my doctoral dream. To do research with DBA likes a treasure hunting - it is a challenging but rewarding journey. I learned systematic literature review to prepare route towards the treasure place.
