Our Aim & Mission

The Department of Economics and Finance provides solid training in both the theory and application of economics and finance. The Department aims to train graduates with cutting-edge knowledge in modern economics and finance and to provide Hong Kong with the young financial executives, economists, and business analysts it needs. The mission of the Department is to be a center of excellence in research and teaching, using economics and finance for business as well as public sector decision-making in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and other Asia-Pacific economies.

Our Programmes

For undergraduate students admitted to the 4-year BBA programme from 2015/16 onwards, the Department offers two majors: Business Economics; and Finance with streams in Finance (General), and Global Financial Markets.

For undergraduate students admitted to the 4-year BBA programme from 2012/13 to 2014/15, the Department offers three majors: Banking and Financial Services; Business Economics; and Finance with streams in Finance, and Quantitative Finance and Risk Management.

The Department also offers MSc programmes in Applied Economics; Finance; Financial Engineering; and Financial Services; and MPhil and PhD programmes in Economics and Finance.

Our Faculty

The Department has over 40 regular and visiting faculty members, who are actively engaged in research and teaching. Several faculty members have been honoured as exemplary teachers. Many of them have compiled outstanding research publication records, with their publications appearing regularly in reputable international refereed journals. In particular, the faculty members teaching postgraduate programmes are internationally recognized scholars in their fields.

Based on research publications, the Department is ranked by published studies in the top tier among all universities in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand. The Department consolidates its research efforts particularly in the areas of corporate governance, financial markets of Hong Kong, Mainland China, and other Asia-Pacific economies as well as studies related to the global economy and international trade, and promotes interactions among scholars in Hong Kong and the rest of the world.
