Speaker: Ir Allen Yeung, Chief Information Officer, Government of HKSAR
The newly appointed Chief Information Officer for the Government of HKSAR, Ir Allen Yeung has visited CityU and shared with MBA students his inside story of becoming a Government Senior Executive from an Engineer.
Born in the era of culture evolution, Ir Yeung moved to Hong Kong in his early age and later on completed his bachelor and master degrees specialized in electrical engineering, artificial intelligence and robotics in the US. He started his career in Silicon Valley as a hardware and software engineer in software prior to returning to Hong Kong in the mid-90s to further his career. He served a number of senior management positions in multinational enterprises and Hong Kong listed companies and joined the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation as the Chief Corporate Development Officer mainly responsible in driving Hong Kong’s innovation and technology development, nurturing the curiosity of the young generation and encouraging them to live their dreams and startup businesses.
Ir Yeung shared with MBA students how he witnessed IT becomes the driving factor in the process of globalization, but also how it drives the innovative resources to promote new products and ideas across nations and cultures, regardless of its geographic locations. “Internet has become an essential component of people daily life and it is changing the way we work, socialize and share information and in particular how businesses operate.” Ir Yeung said. “As a result, the government, businesses and our young generation must recognize and embrace the enormous opportunities that the internet can create”.
During the evening, Ir Yeung has also shared with our students the lists of challenges within his new role working as HKSAR Government CIO. These include managing the internal IT infrastructure for 80 departments within the government, the development of citizen centric services and promotion of IT industry in Hong Kong.
MBA students were actively involved in the Q & A session covering topics like the future development of IT industry in Hong Kong and how the city remains competitive in the rapid growth e-commerce market within the region.
