The Data Mining Challenge Award Presentation Ceremony 2014 was just held at City University of Hong Kong. This award was sponsored by SAS Institute (HK) to the students of the Department of Management Sciences who did well in their project work of the major core course “Enterprise Data Mining” in the 2013/2014 academic year. During the ceremony, Professor YV Hui (Associate Dean of SGS) and Mr. Wilfred Wah (Chief Operating Officer of SAS Institute Limited) gave a welcome message. The champion, consisting of Nichole Au, Gion Lam, Jessie Lee and CC Yuen, analysed simulated bank customers’ financial data in order to make management decisions such as estimation of the preapproval credit amount, prediction of loan borrowing pattern, customer segmentation and customer loan repaying ability. The first runner-up, consisting of Chan Chu Ming, Tang Ho Yi and Wong Sui Yan, analysed simulated membership scheme data of a theme park to predict renewal decision of card members, increase the effectiveness of allocating the resources to members and enhance marketing strategy by segmentation. The second runner-up, consisting of Chan Ka Lok, Chan Ka Wai, Cheung Wing Kit and Lo Pak Ki, analyzed the simulated customer data of a cosmetics retail company to identify the characteristics of each segment, predict the spending of customers and identify the buying behavior of the customers. Winning group of first place, second place and third place was awarded a total of HKD4,000, HKD3,000 and HKD2,000 cash prizes respectively by the SAS Institute Limited.
