Professor Stephen SHUM, Dean of College of Business, addresses the 2026 College of Business Commencement.

Officiating at the ceremony, Professor Stephen SHUM, Dean of the College of Business, congratulated graduates on their perseverance and accomplishments as they completed their studies in an era defined by rapid technological advancement and global change.

In his address themed “Lead What’s Next,” Dean SHUM encouraged graduates to embrace their uniquely human strengths in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). He said, “AI can calculate, but it cannot care. AI can optimise, but it cannot dream,” he added, “The ‘Next’ is not a predetermined destination. It is a blank canvas. While technology can provide the tools, it is up to you to define the masterpiece.” Emphasising the importance of human-centric leadership, he urged graduates to cultivate empathy, vision, and ethical judgment as they step into their professional journeys, “When you enter the workplace, don’t just ask how technology can make things faster. Ask where you are going—and whether it is a place worth reaching,” he remarked. “Go out there, be bold, and Lead What’s Next.”

Student Voices Reflect Transformative Journeys

Student representatives from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes shared heartfelt reflections on their academic journeys and expressed gratitude to the CityUHK community.

Representing the undergraduate cohort, Adam GEAR recalled his first arrival in Hong Kong and the unexpected kindness that shaped his university experience. “Drenched in sweat and completely lost, I was helped by a stranger who showed me the way. That simple act of kindness stayed with me,” he said. “While the world around us has changed rapidly, interpersonal kindness has been the constant of my time here.” Reflecting on friendships and global experiences, he highlighted how his time at CityUHK broadened his perspective and transformed his life trajectory. “My four years here have completely changed the trajectory of my life. I hope we can all ‘open the door’ for others—just as someone once did for me.”

Speaking on behalf of postgraduate students, MBA graduate Perry WU Songxi underscored the collective effort behind every graduate’s success. “Our achievements were never a solitary accomplishment. Behind every late-night study session and challenge was the unwavering support of our families, professors, and peers.” He also expressed appreciation for the guidance of faculty members and the practical knowledge gained during the programme. “Our professors didn’t just teach theory—they equipped us with the skills to think critically, collaborate effectively, and make meaningful contributions in our careers.” Looking ahead, he encouraged fellow graduates to give back to society and embrace future challenges.
