Description: The world population was estimated to have reached 7.5 billion in April 2017, with 95% of this in developing or underdeveloped countries. With the world now being more connected than ever, we must learn new ways to solve problems in the developing world through:

  • Effective innovation and application of engineering and technology
  • Tackling global issues like poverty reduction, sustainable development and climate change
  • Urgently developing greener engineering and lower carbon technology

Chun Wo understands that recognizing and empowering the next generation of innovators is key to addressing these issues over the long term. In this light, the Chun Wo Innovation Student Award (CWISA) aims to invite students to develop their own innovative solutions that help our cities become more human, more connected, greener, fairer, more citizen-focused, more cultural, and/or more sustainable.

This award requires students to address a real-world sustainable development issue in a developing country. For consistency purposes, participants can refer to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable development issues1, and the IMF’s most recent list of emerging market and developing economies2 when selecting a target geographic location.
