Young Tax Professional of the Year 2015

Achievement

Katrina Hu, a final year student in the AC Department, won 2nd Prize in the Local Competition and 3rd Prize in the National Competition of EY’s Young Tax Professional of the Year 2015.

Background

EY’s Young Tax Professional of the Year 2015 is an international competition designed to enhance the professional skills and develop the careers of promising young tax professionals. The competition gives participants the opportunity to share knowledge and experience with tax professionals from a range of backgrounds and cultures.

It began as a local competition, soon became a national competition, and eventually expanded into an international competition. Participants are required to demonstrate their knowledge of the technicalities of tax, and their reasoning, presentation, and communication skills.

Along the Road

After participating in the debate, case study, presentation, and Q&A session, Katrina was awarded 2nd Prize in the Local Competition. She then represented HK at the National Competition, competing against nine other contestants from Beijing, Guangzhou, and Taiwan. After an intensive 45-minute case study and a 10-minute presentation, Katrina won 3rd Prize.

When asked about her experiences, she said the most important factor in her success was the desire to learn rather than the desire to win. Apart from the challenges she encountered, she had fun meeting a lot of people and even made some friends.

Katrina said another factor contributing to her success was the support of the AC Department, particularly guidance from its academic staff. When she was preparing for the National Competition, Mr. Yip and Ms. Lai (Mimi) helped her collect tax-related materials and guided her through the prescribed materials.
