a)Do You See at My Level? Leader-Follower Congruence in Construal level and Follower Work Outcomes
By Dr. Junhyok Yim
Abstract
Prior research has suggested that leaders should direct their subordinates to see the big picture and focus on a long-term goal, and to do so, it is essential for leaders to possess a high construal level. However, this view largely assumes that followers can see and value the big pictures and goals that their leader directs them to. To address when and how followers work well with high construal leaders, we examine the congruence effect of leader and follower construal-level on follower work outcomes. Specifically, drawing upon construal-level theory and transactional theory of stress, we posit that followers are more likely to appraise working with a leader as a challenge (hindrance)—a working condition that enhances (inhibits) personal learning and growth—when leader and follower’s construal level match at each level. For instance, situations in which both leaders and followers rate their construal as low should be associated with higher challenge (lower hindrance) appraisals (and subsequent task performance and helping behavior) than situations of mismatch in which a single member rates their mental mindset as high construal level. Moreover, follower ratings of challenge (hindrance) appraisal should be higher (lower) when the construal level matches at a higher level compared to at a lower level. Further, followers should appraise working with their leader as more challenging (hindrance) when a leader’s construal level is higher than their construal level compared to when their construal level is higher than a leader’s. In sum, this study advances our understanding of when, why, and how a congruence of construal level between leader and followers affect follower work outcomes.
b)The investigation of relationship between firm CSR reporting and performance
By Mr. Jianling Yin
Abstract
This research investigates how firm’s CSR reporting behavior may influence its financial return in different circumstances. Using the data-mining technology and CSMAR database, we found that the content of CSR report is positively related with firm performance, meanwhile, compulsory reporting and advertisement intensity will weaken the effect, donation and political connection will strengthen the effect.
