Business Career Talk Series by Top Executives – Day Three

The College of Business and City University of Hong Kong Postgraduate Association hosted Day Three of the Business Career Talk Series on Saturday, 7th December. This event is the last event of a three-day Career Talk Series which took place on consecutive Saturdays: 23rd November, 30th November, and 7th December.

Opening Speaker

Dr. Christina Sue-Chan, Associate Head and Associate Professor of Department of Management at the College of Business, opened the day introducing the current Job Market in Hong Kong and China and advising that:

  • Small cultural differences might make it difficult for students to cope with others at work.
  • Permanent head count is replaced by contract positions in all sectors.
  • The best source of job is through personal contacts
  • “Key to success: Soft skills”

Industry Professional Speakers

Mr. Micky Lo, Managing Director, Head of Information Risk Management of Asia-Pacific BNY Mellon then presented an overview of the IT and Financial sector to the audience. He shared some tips based on his personal experience:

  • Information risk is getting more and more important.
  • There are reasons behind each switching of jobs; it may be due to the differences in cultural, in work nature, etc.
  •  “Open your horizon, don't limit yourself.”

Mr. Dempster Chan, Director for Business Development of UPS Capital, the second speaker, shared with the audience some professional advice on applying for jobs in the Economics and Finance industry, highlighting:

  • Applicants should 1) Tidy up your CV, 2) Follow-up with an email or call after sending in CV, and 3) Be enthusiastic and keen, not desperate.
  • “Be real, be yourself and don’t sugar coat things, employers will know.”
  • “You are responsible for your own career development, not your employer.”

Mr. Steve Huen, Executive Director of EGL Tours Company Ltd. concluded the event with company examples of how effective crisis management can turn problems into opportunities. Some advice from Mr. Huen:

  • You should be able to foresee the upcoming crisis, even before it becomes one.
  • Do the right thing at the right time. Don't stop when crisis occurs; move forward and solve the problem.
  • Three important factors of crisis management:
    • Find opportunity in stability
    • Foreseeability in upcoming crisis
    • Reverse-thinking/ positive-thinking mentality: crisis also gives rise to opportunities.
