After months of hard work and preparation, two CB undergraduates WONG Chun Kit, Jacky from BBA (Hons) Marketing and AU Pui Yee, Ada from BBA (Hons) Accountancy, embarked on a 21-day voyage to Antarctica together with 21 teammates on Saturday 14th December to work on an extreme climate art and science interdisciplinary research project.
A pre-departure reception Extreme Environments Programme: Antarctica was held on 13th December for the team made up of students from various majors and Departments. Prof. Arthur ELLIS, Acting President joined with Prof. Houmin YAN, Dean of College of Business, and Dr. Lok-sze LEE, the first woman to successfully conquer the North Pole, the South Pole and Mount Everest. Other CityU management and faculty also attended the reception and gave their blessings to the students for a safe and fruitful journey.
The expedition team, led by Prof. Scott HESSELS, Associate Professor of School of Creative Media flew to Argentina and from there sailed to Antarctica. Students will work on their research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.
Participants were partially responsible for raising the basic travel costs of HK$30,000. Community donations and sponsorship are still welcome as all contributions received will go toward offsetting participants’ and their families’ personal costs.
The team will return to Hong Kong on 3rd January, 2014 and soon after they will conduct data interpretation and analysis for introducing new approaches in understanding climate change and sustainable solutions. All data and outcomes will be showcased by using animation, gaming, cinema, robotics in the CityU 30th Anniversary Exhibition in May 2014.
