The Department of Accountancy held an orientation day welcoming the newly admitted accounting major BBA year 2 students at Academic 1 on 9th January.
Prof. Jeong-bon Kim, Head of Department of Accountancy, opened the orientation day in a special way. Being the Head of the Department, it would not be surprising to hear some statistics: “We are proud of you!” Prof. Kim exclaimed. “You are among the top 30% of your age group in HK. And of that 30%, only about 20% remain in HK and far fewer still make it through to the Department of Accountancy. You are the cream of the crop.”
Prof. Kim then went on to introduce the department’s history, extra-curricular activities, overseas exchange opportunities, and its faculty members to the class.
The session was followed by a presentation on Basic issues for academic studies and personal developmental process and general advice given by Mr. David Yip, Senior Teaching Fellow of the Department of Accountancy. He summarized his advice in four simple points:
The day ended with a career planning talk by Ms. Dilys Chau, CityU alumna and Partner, Assurance of Ernst & Young, and Ms. Agnes Ip, Assistant Director, Talent of Ernst & Young. Ms. Chau urged the students to remember that “We are not just mere accountants, we don’t just crunch numbers. We are advisors to clients’ financial problems.”
