The Department of Management Sciences of the College of Business & Department of System Engineering and Engineering Management of the College of Science and Engineering jointly hosted a healthcare management workshop at Academic 3 on 5th January.
165 academic and industrial participants from world leading schools such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, New York University, The University of British Columbia, and National University of Singapore; and from regional universitiessuch as The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and Tsinghua University attended the event. The workshop provided a global platform for researchers and practitioners in management science, operations management, systems engineering, and related disciplines to share ideas on designing and operating a world-class healthcare delivery system.
Prof. Houmin Yan, Dean of the College, opened the workshop emphasizing the importance of operations issues in efficient healthcare delivery. He also highlighted challenges facing the healthcare system in Hong Kong.
The workshop invited distinguished researchers and healthcare practitioners from around the world (US, Canada, France, and HK) to share their knowledge with the audience.

The presentations were followed by two panel discussions facilitated by Prof. Michael L. Pinedo, Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management and Chair of Department of Information, Operations and Management Sciences at New York University, U.S.A.; and Prof. David Yao, Piyasombatkul Family Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University, U.S.A..
Prof. Michael L. Pinedo and Mr. Christos Zacharias, PhD Candidate at New York University analyzed the effective practice of appointment overbooking to offset no-show phenomenon, while Prof. David Yao discussed the challenges and opportunities of healthcare operations management.
The workshop ended with an open discussion where attendees explored various methods of designing and implementing an efficient healthcare delivery system.
