Dunhuang silk road city recreated in 360° virtual reality

Prize winning student films and 360° virtual reality technology were the star attractions when a group of 28 senior executives from the Hong Kong Chinese Enterprise Association (HKCEA) visited CityU on 18th February. The event was organized by the Development Office of CityU to promote university programmes to IT professionals from various enterprises such as China Unicom, China Telecom Global Limited, China Merchants Group, China Mobile, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, and China Travel Service (Holdings) Hong Kong Limited.

The group went on a tour of the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre of the School of Creative Media (CMC). Dr Gang Hao, Associate Vice-President of the Development Office of CityU, and her team led the tour to watch students’ winning short films at Future Cinema, “Dances with the Green - An Art Exhibition on the Northeastern New Territories” at CMC Gallery, and “Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang” 3D exhibition of ancient China at Gallery 360.The exhibition uses a 360° virtual reality technology with audio and video effect to recreate the north wall of Cave 220 in Dunhuang of the ancient time. Representatives recognized the need to conserve the Chinese heritage at Dunhuang, the city which was once a major stop on the ancient Silk Road.

The tour was followed by a luncheon at 9/F of the Staff Lounge, accompany by CityU management team, CB faculty, CMC faculty, and the Development Office staff:

Prof Jian Lu, Vice-President (Research and Technology) and Dean of Graduate Studies and Prof Quan Xue, Associate Vice-President (Innovation Advancement and China Office) and Deputy Director, State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves (Hong Kong) welcomed the guests and encouraged knowledge exchange between university research and business practical.

Prof Houmin Yan, Dean of the College of Business, looks forward to future collaborations with HKCEA on business-related projects as he announced the College’s newest ranking, at 46th worldwide and 2nd in Asia-Pacific, in the UT Dallas Top 100 Worldwide Business School Rankings 2009-2013.

Mr Feng Zuo, Chairman of the HKCEA, and President & General Manager of China Unicom, commented on the importance of an interdisciplinary learning process for education institutions and business enterprises. “Universities are missing the ‘on field practice’ opportunity while businesses often times are missing the ‘innovative and discovery’ element.” Mr Zuo added.

Souvenirs were exchanged as a symbol for future collaborations between CityU and the Hong Kong Chinese Enterprise Association before lunch was served.
